first realize you are not alone, millions have the same issues. Next, see a psychiatrist for an evaluation, he can determine the type of depression and the best medications to help you out. Next, and this is important, find a therapist to talk to. Your depression is caused by past issues and you need the help of a therapist to find what those issues are and work to resolve them. Whatever you do, don't give up on yourself. Depression is a treatable illness, like any other illness.

Someone who really cared for me snapped me out of my blues by telling me that depression is anger turned inwards. We go through life trying to make things and people fit into what we hope for or expect. When things or circumstances go another way and not our way - we are angry but often dare not show it. This piles up into bitterness and disappointment inside us and boils over in the course of time to overflow onto the surface of our awareness as depression.
What a relief to wake up and realize: We control nothing except the way we choose to respond to our circumstances. Even in that one thing, we often have a hard time. Do you want to stay bItter (I capitalize the letter "I" because a bitter person's focus is self) or get better? (A healthy ego is a "small" one).
We CAN change the world, but one life at a time - this starts with YOU!
It is a BIG and important step you have already made by acknowledging you are depressed. However, DO NOT BE TEMPTED to use this to "get your way". Rather, GET OUT OF IT AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN!
Change of heart, perspective, and attitude. Be "other" centered.

Usually it helps to get counseling and take medication. The first medication you try might not work. You can also eat better and get more exercise. Some people like meditation. Some people just need more sleep.
