A guy knocked on my door one evening and said he was collecting doations for our local volunteer fire department. He was not in a uniform nor did he have anythnig that would identify him as a volunteer firefighter. I was being cautious so I told him I had no cash on hand but could I mail in a check in to the department. He told me no, that they "are not set up for that." So I told him that I wouldn't donate and he left. So my questions are would the VFD send a plain clothes person out to collect door to door? And also, could it be possible that the VFD would reject a donation sent in by mail? I just find that hard to believe and I'm wondering if this guy was a scammer.

If they are doing that, the fire truck will be heard in the neighborhood, as well, as seen. The person should be in uniform, and his badge will out for display on the uniform, checks are accepted, you do not HAVE to give, I send a check in, they usually go to the houses that did not send in a check via the mail out cards from the fire house.

I got a call from the NY state police looking for a donation, I said "Really, the NY state police DO NOT call for contributions", I got "well we are not the NY state police and", thats all I had to hear...click

Sounds like a scam. One time a very nervous looking man tried to sell me a newspaper subscription, one year for $10. He had "free" papers he was handing out, which he probably got from the corner vending machine.

I sincerely doubt that any charity would reject check donations. In fact, checks are the best because they are easier to keep track of.

It does sound like a scam.
Where I live they never send a plain clothed person to
your door collecting donations for the fire department.

It was definitely a scam. Any charitable organization would have proper identification. You were wise to do as you did. I also dislike the so called charities that solicit money by using hired personnel. I am quite sure if you contacted the local VFD they would welcome a donation. I firmly believe in honest charities but can't stand con artists that hide behind them.
