I'm talking about Luxuria (extravagance, later lust), Gula (gluttony), Avaritia (greed), Acedia (sloth), Ira (wrath, more commonly known as anger), Invidia (envy), and Superbia (pride). Should we be controlled by a greater "being" or is this abstract god nonsense

Sins are generally actions that harm yourself and others.
It's not so much that you should fear them and be controlled by them. It's more about bringing them under control to treat yourself better and be a better neighbor and example to others.
Those who use the wages of sin as a blunt instrument of hatred and intolerance in the name of religion should be shot.

I believe in god but he is the god of my understanding. He is my very own haute couture personal Jesus with long flowing hair and honey highlight's he drives around town in a 1959 Pink Impala and he just so happens to think that I am fabulous, I know because he told me so!
we all can play dumb if we like. but we all know right from wrong. I suggest that every one look for there own personal truth and be as good or bad as you wish. I believe that like attract like. so work on becoming what ever it is that you would like to attract? but don't take my word for it. Go out there make your choice and see what comes your way. if your happy keep on doing what your doing. If your not happy you might want to make a better choice. At the end of the day you can call it logic, common sense,Carma, or Captin crunch and the Jesus Crispy's.
I like to call it accountability. You wake up you make a few choices, then we live with the consequence of our choices. If your life is great its all your fault? If its bad ,guess what? Its all your fault.
You can lead a horse to the mall,
But you can't make him shop.

No. Sin is an outdated concept.
The "Seven Deadly Sins" that you reference really aren't bad unless taken to an extreme or expressed in the wrong situation. To test this, consider their opposites. Being totally asexual is as bad as being obsessed about sex. Starvation is as bad as eating too much. Trying to aquire too much is bad. However, you won't survive if you never take anything for yourself. At the minimum, you have to eat. Apathy is as bad as being bitter. Pride is what makes people strive for success. Being insecure about oneself is as bad as narcissism.
In short, these are all just human characteristics that are loosely based on instinct. Those instincts have allowed us to survive for millions of years. Unfortunately, we can't go just by instincts. Society evolves much faster than biology. So those instincts that served us well before, sometimes get in the way now. So, we have to temper them in order navigate the more complicated world of social mores and laws.
So, any of our characteristics are good or bad depending on how they are expressed and to what extreme. It really doesn't make sense to think in terms of 2000 year old lists of rules created by religious zealots.

Lust can lead to all sorts of problems, just ask any man who regularly visits prostitutes, or who spends time on porno chat sites instead of with his family.
Gluttony leads to horrible health problems, look at anyone who is obese and you will see for yourself.
Greed, sloth, anger, evy and pride are all bad for your body and your mind. They cause undue stress (or in sloth's case, lack of stress lol) on the body and make the mind incapable of making good sound choices.
Given these things that we know, is it any wonder God detests them? These 7 sins are horrible on the body and mind, not to mention the spirit. Remember, a sin is anything that is bad for your body, mind and/or soul.

sin is a tool for us to be better, they are not bad as long as you learn from them,it is like a hammer,to put nails in not kill.So sin is like a hammer,do not be afraid of sin,use them to your advantage and you control them not them controlling you.
