These are not very good photos to tell the color of the dog from. We actually would need to see some shots from the side so we have the body included in the photos. What little bit of the body we can see in these photos look like the dog may be a fawn or even red coloring, but it is difficult to tell.

We know it isn't tri colored or black and white!

Added:The AKC registration papers has him listed as tan and black? I would have to question the papers that came with the pup. It sounds very much like this woman has given you the incorrect registration papers with this dog.

How old is this puppy????

Puppies have a soft spot or "molera" on the top of the skull. The bone usually closes the gap by adulthood.

Colors include fawn, sand, chestnut, silver and steel blue, but any color is accepted, including black & tan and parti-color.

Your pup definitely isn't ''tan & black". She may have thought the darkness around the muzzle was ''black''.

The pictures aren't the best quality, but it looks like he could possibly be a ''Red'', actually.

I agree with Chihuahua mama. He's fawn (I have one the same colour) He may go sandy red as he gets older. He also looks like he could have hydrocephalus. It could just be the pictures, but the eyes look wrong and the head looks very large for such a tiny pup.

Not only did they give you the wrong papers I feel they may well have sold you a sick puppy. I would be at the vet first thing in the morning. It could just be the pictures, but I would not have taken this pup for free.

I pray all will be okay for this little guy and things will work out for you.

the molera (soft spot) is 100% normal and common in the breed, as long as he doesnt bump his head on that spot its fine and normal :)
at one point the chihuahua could NOT be shown unless it had an open molera...nowerdays its optional and not considered a fault either way.

as for colour...
chihuahuas are not their adutl colour untill they are 3 years old, his shading will change over the next few years.
however at his current age and colour...
hes a chocolate sable.
that means his undercoat is fawn and the tips of his hair and mask are chocolate.

as he gets older the sabling may completly go away making him fawn, or he may get heavier sabling which would make him more of a chocolate. id personally list him as fawn sable.

hes very cute but please get him to a vet asap for a check up and watch his blood sugar, i am not sure how repuatable his breeder is...

He is a fawn, period. He is cute, but from the pix, I get the feeling he may have a large soft spot(open fontanel)(molera). If it is very large there is a strong chance he has hydrocephalus. You should take him to the vet and have him evaluated. He looks kind of sickly to me, weak eyes. He may just be tired in the pix. Please have him seen by a vet ASAP!! I had a hydro baby. The condition is very serious. I hope I am wrong. I could tell if I could see him in person but I can't. Good luck with your little one. Hope I am wrong.

Your dog is SOOOO very cute. I don't know the answer to the coloring question but the soft spot on the head is normal.. mine has one and the vet told me they sometimes close but not always. Its called a Molera. Mine in 1 year old and still has a small one (pinkey sized) It does not affect him at all you just need to be careful about head inuries. Even without a molera they are small and have a little head. I think Chis are the best dogs in the world!

beige or fawn. its normal for him to have a soft spot, just like babies it will close over time. make sure he doesn't fall or whack his head as their little bones are so delicate.i bought a poochi on oct 2nd but he is more poodle than chi. when i checked into the breed it mentioned the soft spot as being normal.my guy has a hard head and is very active. he is black and white. good luck with your new pal.
