On my road bike I have a Dura Ace 10 running 53/12
I am looking into T.T. bikes for my next toy and They are running 53/11, 53/12
54/12, etc
These are really big gears to be pushing constantly. How much time on the bike are they really in those gears during an event?

Yes they are really big gears. Some people need them and some people don't. In the race against the clock you need all the speed you can get. A long flat or downhill road is a good place to make up some time. If you can get on top of it, a big gear is a good way to do it. I"m a power rider myself. When I raced, I was a sprinter but also did well in shorter time trials. I needed a big gear to get speed on those flatter sections.

Don't worry about the gear the bike comes with. That is all changeable. Worry about fit and form first.

Those are some big gears, and I would only recommend them if find yourself spinning out on your road bike. The reason is that if you have a bigger ring than you need, you'll find yourself shifting down to the small ring for more of the hills. At best this breaks up your rhythm, and at worst you drop your chain. I would start out with a 53/12, and be prepared to switch out cassettes and maybe chainrings for different courses.

It depends on you pedal power. If you do have then it is not a problem. Try to maintain sa cadence around 90rpm. If you bounce on your seat then you need to increase your gear 1 notch till you get the right gear ratio.
