Normally, it is understood to be the change from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. (And no, it hasn't started yet; the "dawning" was celebrated well before the actual date.) This has to do with the procession of the equinoxes. There is a very good astronomical explanation of it in the movie Zeitgeist, but the basic idea is the earth makes a slow procession against the background of the zodiacal stars, and Christianity (which used a fish as a symbol) began about the beginning of the Age of Pisces (the fish). The ages are something over 2000 years long, so we're soon due to enter the Age of Aquarius (the water bearer). Make what predictions you like about how that will be manifested, but one possibility is that global warming will raise the level of the oceans so much that water -- flooding -- will be a major issue in the Age of Aquarius. Or perhaps more optimistically, the level of repair we accomplish with respect to the environment to halt the global warming and therefore save the world from that excess water. I just think about how large a proportion of the world's population lives near coasts. In "An Inconvenient Truth," Al Gore shows some startling computer-generated maps of the earth's land masses as this warming takes place, melting the glaciers and raising the ocean levels. Manhattan Island, for one not too random example.

For the most part I have found new age is a dirty, sneaky, caniving way of saying that a person is weird and evil said by a fundamentalist traditionalist without saying that they want you damned. They don't clench their teeth as much when they say "New Ager". They have been taught, programmed, not to debate but to use this expression to fend off the evil spirits that dare question their traditions. Beware of people who call you a New Ager. They probably don't like you much and they probably are so scared they will not be able to view you as friendly unless you perform a miracle for them!
If you upset the apple cart of the social engine of Eternal Damnation Worship in any of the major fundamentalist traditionalist organized religions, you are a threat to their existence. We are talking business here, whether or not you realize it. Most of their parishoners have been moved up in society from this network. If you threaten it, you are a liability. When they call you a "new ager", especially in front of others who belong to their organizations, it is a signal that you are fare game for oppression because you are a threat to them. You might mean well and have a happier outlook on life, but if you don't go along with their programmed dogma, you are a liability to their continued existence. You might tell others. This is all they know how to do. So be as gentle as you can when you do your discerning. Don't seem to self righteous!
Jesus found out the hard way!

In the Great Platonic Cycle (the procession of the equinoxes, which runs in reverse order through the signs of the zodiac and takes around 2160 years to pass through each sign) the earth is currently reaching the end of the age of Pisces and is entering the "new age" of Aquarius.
Pisces' symbolism is the fish, which is also the symbolism of Christ's teachings. The age of Pisces began at the time of Christ, when he gave his message to mankind. Before Pisces was the age of Aries the ram, which is symbolic of Moses and The Law of God.
For over 2000 years Christ's true teachings have been kept secret by the Church and State, which until recently were one. They taught about Jesus, but presented themselves as the bearers and source of His power in order to maintain control over the people. Until the 17th century, the Bible was kept in Latin and people were prohibited to read or even posses it, under pain of death. But no Church or Community actually did and lived Christ's true teachings, so the seed-truth never got "watered" and never germinated into an organism.
Now, as we enter the "new age" of Aquarius, who is the water-bearer, the Bible has been translated into every human language, and is freely available for all to read. Groups of people are starting to awaken and develop spiritually. The seed-truth that Christ bore is being "watered" and is starting to germinate.

Each age consists of 2000 years. They are called in name according to the astrological sign we are in. We are at the end of the Age of Pisces (the fish) and we are entering into the Age of Aquarius ( the water bearer). Jesus talked about this and the Xian symbol is the fish. He told his disciples in the new age to look for the man bearing a water pitcher, which is Aquarius. The bible is all about astrology. Especially the NT. I am not a xian, but I found this aspect of it all fascinating and intriguing.

The new age is not new at all; but a cycle that has always brought transition, evolution, and regeneration to all beings on every planet...not just Earth. When you look back on Human history and ancient cultures (Lu maria, Atlantis, ext. you will discover that our patters as a culture have repeated them self. There was a beginning and an end. The new age is an age of seemingly confusing, destructive events that will always shape the mold of our culture; which is for the preservation of goodness.

The definition that I use is that "New Age" refers to an often unrelated set of techniques for personal spiritual advancement. Some of these techniques are quite old, but they have usually been removed from their native cultural setting and given a "modern" spin.
As a Wiccan, I do NOT consider myself New Age. To me, New Age has no religious content -- it focusses almost entirely on techique and not at all on one's relationship to the Divine presence. Also, the New Age movement seems to believe that you can buy enlightenment -- pick up enough expensive gewgaws and pay for enough $200/hr seminars and you're good to go. This is exactly the opposite of Wicca, where we believe that only hard work and personal effort will lead to spiritual advancement.

At this point the term has become so vague as to be almost meaningless. The most useful definition I've found so far is "Of or relating to a complex of spiritual and consciousness-raising movements originating in the 1980s and covering a range of themes from a belief in spiritualism and reincarnation to advocacy of holistic approaches to health and ecology."

New Age is a very broad term describing the non-mainstream spirituality founded after WWII in the West. It is based mainly on Oriental philosophies, but also on Wicca and some loose "science".

Essentially a blanket term for all things cultic, superstitious, and occultic. It covers the range of all religious views and centers primarily in Hinduism, but is certainly not limited to it. The obvious religion not invited to the New Age party is Christianity. Go to any New Age bookstore and you will see everything that God condemns in the Bible. That is why the New Age condemns the Bible.

many people use this term to describe any style of 'new spiritual thought' or healing modality...which is generated from the shift in consciousness that this astrological change is producing
