Don't listen to the people telling you to just give up and replace the carpet!!! You have options before going that far!!
I had to deal with this before only it was a puppy instead of a cat. The puppy peed EVERYWHERE and the house smelled like pee. It was pretty bad. We found a product that was just amazing.
It’s called Urine Eliminator by Rug Doctor. It comes in a spray bottle and is available anywhere they rent the machines (you don't need the machine to do it but it wouldn't hurt it if you did). You should be able to find it at Home Depot, Lowes, and some grocery stores. It couldn't be easier though. You just spray the affected areas and walk away!! There is no scrubbing or anything it just has to sit and it kills the smell. I know that sounds so weird but it is what it says on the bottle.
We had so many affected areas that we bought the Urine Eliminator and rented one of the Rug Doctor machines. I went around and sprayed pretty much every inch of the carpet (we used two bottles for a one bedroom apartment) and then my boyfriend went over everything with the machine. Technically you're supposed to just leave it but it still worked. We just let it sit for about 15 minutes to a half hour before using the machine. We also had a few spots along the walls that the machine couldn’t get and we just sprayed those the next day and the spots are gone. Even better so is the smell!!! YAY!!
You have to try this stuff! It could save you a lot of money in replacing your carpet.
Good luck!

No! You will have to replace the carpet and pad and (kilz) the subfloor. (Cat urine sometimes gets sprayed on the walls and trim as well.)
The smell is there for good otherwise!
Tell your ex-friend to get his/her cat fixed and be a responsible pet owner and take care of the cat or give it to someone that will! Then I would demand that they pitch in or cover the cost of new carpet/pad/pet seal !!!!

There is this stuff I bought at Kmart called Out, Pet stain and odor remover. I had to spray it a few times on the area, but I think that was because someone told me to put vinegar on the area to get ride of the smell, which it did, but had a heck of a time getting the vinegar smell out. I believe the Out stuff would work with one no more than two applications.

Use Baking soda, just sprinkle someone and then vaccumm it up later. also buy some clummping litter and some covered little box. To stop the spray, have your kitty fixed, Viste the link to see more about fixing your cat. Is it an indoor only cat? That also prevents spraying. If it is an indoor out door cat, stop ASAP. and keep it as an INDOOR ONLY.

Go to www.nokout.com. It is a great product that takes out any odor that I have attacked with it. You can use it in a carpet shampooer. The person that runs the company is great and has all sorts of hints and ideas to help you get rid of smells and odors.

unfortunately, no there is no easy way to get the smell of cat urine out of anything! i had a cat urine in my car and i spent 50$ on different cat urine smell removers and none of them worked actually they all worked for about a day and then the smell came back. i finally took the seat out of my car and ran 100's of gallons of water through the seat to hopefully dillude the urine and it worked!!! so..... besides buying urine removal products from pet stores i also tried, lemon oil which worked for a day, oxyclean, natures miracle, steam cleaning with natures miracle lol. all sorts of odd stuff i found on the net. i wish you the best of luck! cat urine is the pitts!

It will go away eventually but to make it go faster, you can use Anti-Icky-Poo. The name is really weird but i used it and it works very well. Try it!!! http://cats.about.com/od/cleaningmesses/tp/odorout.htm
