Absolutely not.

I do not feel compelled in any way to reward bad behavior. I am an expediter and if I'm late (equal to bad service) it cost's me money, and when I'm on time (good service) I don't get any extra.

My latest "waitress pissed off at me" story....I was at a Denny's, the waitress took my order, brought my food and ignored me the rest of the time I was there, I had to go to the counter every time I wanted a refill on my drink. The food however (chicken breast) was done perfectly. Before I left I went to the manager and handed him a ten dollar bill and made sure that he gave it to the cook for doing such a good job with the food, the waitress seeing that went to the table and saw nothing but dishes to clean up and shot me a look that would have made me a greasy spot on the floor if looks could kill.

At the very least leave 12-15%. It does not matter whether the service was good or bad.

1.) !!!THE MOST IMPORTANT!!!! The government, regardless of how much you tip them, taxes all waiters and waitresses 8% of their total sales, minus comps, voids, and discounts. That means for every $100, they are getting taxed like they received $8. Tax law states they must claim 100% of their tips, with a minimum of 8% (so if they didn't get 8% they are still getting taxed like they did).

2.) Servers have to tip out to the bartenders, the expos(guys who get food ready), and the bussers. Generally its 1% each, so for every $100 the server has to give away $3 *OR MORE*.

Following simple math you will see that if servers have to tip out 3% of their sales, and got a 10% tip, they are *really* only receiving a 7% tip. That means they are still getting taxed 1% more than they are receiving. They are essentially getting stolen from if you don't tip at least 12-15%.

3.) You ARE receiving a service. Whether you liked the service or not, you still received it. This is the servers lifeline. 99% of the time they are not purposefully giving bad service, because tips ARE their income. (I didn't think of this myself, I learned it from a business teacher at my university)

whenever you go to a place ....there is a 50 % chance it will be good and 50% it wont !

The restaurant industry ( mainly waiters ) survive on our tips....

Now
If you have good food + waiter service is good you give 25%
If you have good food + waiter service is bad you give 20%
If you have bad food + waiter service is good you give 20%
If you have bad food + waiter service is bad you give 15%

Food = 10 % (max) deduct 5 for bad
Service= 15%(max) deduct 5 for bad
More % for Service than food because the service can be improved at a particular hotel but the food cant....also they survive like us

Both food and service graded because you cant enjoy without either of them.....you need both good to have a good experience.....one of them good to have an okay experience....and both bad to have a terrible experience

Your fluctuating tips will give him an idea....also you can tell him that since both were good today you gave him a higher tip or one day his service was bad so lesser than yesterday.....
Even if he gets 15% ( worst in worst ) he gets his living but he loses his customer....he gains in short run but loses in the longer one....

Everyone will agree that no one goes more than once to a place where they get the worst food and worst service !

Places which are okay....you still give a chance for a higher tip !

and places which have best of best.....no way you can leave them ....they will be your spots for all your celebrations and happiness.....because those are the places which make you feel happy !!!

note--- minimum tips 15-20% will anyways follow but it will
a)give a chance to improve( an incentive for the waiter not to take the customer for granted )
b)help the needy and instil them with satisfaction of empowerment when they do a good job and earn their tip rightfully.

The word used to be T.I.P.S. Meaning, to insure proper service. It used to be given prior to service. Now we use it to reward for good service. If the service was that bad say something to the manager. They really do want to know. They could be short staffed and it may not be the servers fault completely. The manager should be made aware. If you do not tip say why.

It has to be really bad for $0, but I left only $1 last time I had bad service.

The waitress didn't take my drink order, someone else had to. She barely showed up for my entree order, didn't bring the food and asked if we needed boxes 2 minutes after the food came. She would've been better off not trying at all.

Never stiff your server. If you get bad service then leave a bad tip. If you stiff your server they will let every other server know. If you go to that place fairly often you can bet that the next time you go in the server that you stiffed will remind ever one that you stiffed them. That will increase your chance of getting a little something xtra in your food for free. Servers in most places make under minimum wage. In Texas most servers make 2.13 an hr. + tips. Most servers have to share their tips with buss boys food runners and bartenders.

Hey fresh choice---STFU maybe your wife looks like a guy! It is not an insult just a F@cking greeting. You people who get your panties in a wad over the dumbest things really make me laugh. I would bet on the fact that your food has been spit in on more than one occasion! It will probably continue to happen with that attitude. Bon appetite!

if the service is horrible, maybe $1.00 total...we have left a quarter in some isolated Terrible horrible times
or 10% for so so
20% for right on the mark
often more for execptional service, wait staff with good attitude, friendly, entertaining, willing to go the extra mile

I NEVER ever leave a tip in those stupid jars that are showing up from Subway to Dairy Queen and beyond. I stand and wait for my order and carry it to the table and clean up after myself. So the tip is for What??

Bad service by a waiter or waitress deserves no tip. Likewise, if a waitress gives all her attention to the man at the table, but ignores his wife--who, by the way, will be paying the bill--then she gets no tip from us.

A good waiter and waitress is friendly and helpful to all at the table, not just the one she or he believes will pay the bill.

If the server is in a foul mood. Doesn't smile and makes me feel like I ruined his or her day for ordering food. And it's hardly busy there, I'll give a very VERY low tip. Maybe some loose change at the bottom of my bag. If it's really busy I'd understand but if it's not....it's low or no tip at all.
