Yes, it is possible. I taught myself at the age of 16, with the help of chord books and a guitar player's advice on certain rhythm techniques.

Some of the ways to learn to play are:

1. Learn to read and write music for the guitar.
2. Concentrate on all the chords you can and their progressions.
3. Learn to play in every key without the use of a capo. They are cheaters and will keep you from developing at your best potentials.
4. Use tablature only for certain riffs and lead-ins. Rely on sheet music for a complete song mastery.
5. Take care of your instrument.

Sure. Get a guitar. Get a chord book. Download some songs with chord charts. You'll be strumming in no time.

If you want to play lead, then get a scales book and learn to read tablature.

Also, listen to your favorite music and try to play along. Ask every player that you encounter for tips. Learn to play melodies on one string. Read about guitar and understand how the tuning works.

Yes it is possible... I did it, my sister did it, two of my nephews did it and I am sure many others have... There are numerous instruction books that can be found in your local music store and / or online... Like anything else, it takes practice and the desire to learn..
~good luck.
