I was convicted of a felony 10 years ago. I went to court to get it "expunged" about 5 years ago. Could I ever get a job in law enforcement? what about government jobs? Do I have to admit it on an application that asks, "have you EVER been convicted of a felony. to be safe, I have been admitting it and explaining it to the employer but I hate having to admit and explain it; it is embarrassing.

Government and state agency background checks will still have access to expunged records, but private sector background checks do not. I may be wrong, but that clause falls somewhere within the Patriot Act and it's provisions regarding criminal records and their validity.

WENT TO COURT TO GET IT EXPUNGED? DID YOU GET IT EXPUNGED?

10 YEARS AGO A LONG TIME. BUT IF YOU HAD DONE THE TIME IT WILL SHOW ON RECORD AND SAY EXPUNGED. JUST LIKE A NOLO CONTENDERE.

WRITE IT ONTO APPLICATIONS AND EXPLAIN.

For a gov't or defense job, they may find out anyhow. But in the private sector, answer "NO".

You had better disclose it for a job in LE. They will see it and instantly DQ you for hiding it.
