I have tried making my own frosting using the recipe on the back of some powdered sugars - way, way, way too sweet.

I have also tried puting cream cheese into it. Still too sweet.

Thank you

Better Cream Whipped Cake Icing

¼ cup cold water
1 tsp unflavored gelatin
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1 Tbsp. white sugar
½ tsp vanilla extract

Chill mixing bowl and beaters for at least 15 minutes before using. Place water in a small microwave-safe bowl. Sprinkle gelatin over water and allow to soften 5 minutes. Dissolve gelatin by microwaving for 3 minutes, stirring after every minute. Remove from microwave and let stand at room temperature for 10 minutes; gelatin must be liquid but not warm when added to cream.

Remove bowl and beaters from refrigerator and pour in cream, sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat together just until beater marks begin to show distinctly. Add gelatin mixture to cream, pouring in a steady stream while beating constantly. Beat until stiff peaks form. Use immediately.

I frequently add a little powdered sugar to either sour cream or cream cheese, then whip it until it has the consistency of frosting. Don't ADD the cream cheese to already made frosting. Make frosting out of the cream cheese itself. That way, you can control the sweetness. You could also try adding a little chocolate syrup or powder to either of these mixes. They always turn out great.

This frosting isn't sweet and tastes custardy. I had a lady eat the frosting straight she enjoyed it so much.

BUTTERCREAM FROSTING (it's not your standard buttercream frosting)

1 c milk
1/4 c flour
1 c butter at room temperature
1 c granulated sugar
2 tsp vanilla

Combine milk and flour in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture boils and thickens. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Cream butter and sugar until very fluffy. Add vanilla and cooled flour mixture. Continue to beat at medium speed until frosting is very fluffy and sugar is completely dissolved. (test with your finger - you don't want it to be grainy - it will smooth out as you cream it.)

I took the original recipe one step further and when the flour/milk mixture had thickened, I dropped 1 oz of baking chocolate onto the mixture and let it melt and then mixed it in. It changed the frosting from a custardy vanilla to the flavor of melted chocolate ice cream!!

Enjoy!

Really cream cheese is too sweet. Wow. That tooth problem has got to be pretty bad.

Have you tried a powdered sugar frosting. Or maybe buttermilk frosting.

If nothing works, maybe its the cake or maybe you should check with your dentist.

1/2 cup butter, softened
6 tablespoons shortening
1 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/2 cup warm milk

DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl, cream butter, shortening, sugar and vanilla together. Stir cornstarch into milk and add to butter mixture. Beat at low speed until well blended. Beat another 5 to 7 minutes until icing is creamy.
Note: This icing will appear curdled at first, but continue beating and it will become smooth.

I love this recipe because it is so easy and my family loves it.

COOLWHIP FROSTING

1 pkg. instant pudding and pie filling
1 cup of whole milk
8 oz. CoolWhip

Mix pudding and milk in bowl for 3 minutes. Add CoolWhip. Stirr until fully blended. Spread on cake immediantly. Chill cake. Keep refrigerated.

Don't use frosting, it is the nature of it to be sweet. Just sprinkle some powdered sugar on. You defeat the purpose of frosting if it isn't sweet.
