There is so much more to getting a dog than just wanting one. It's good you're looking at a shelter dog, but make sure you still know what you're getting into and can support him/her.

I think it's a great idea! There are so many unwanted animals that need a good home. I know a lot of people who have got their dogs at the humaine society and they are the best dogs ever.

Absolutely! dogs at shelters need a good home.
Best thing is to go to your local humane society and walk through the kennel area. Most likely you will see a dog that is 'just right" for you. Walk the dog, and spend a little time with him/her before making the decision. Adopting a shelter dog is a wonderful idea, just know that some of them come from bad situations and may have some difficulty in adjusting. Find out anything you can, if it's known, about the dog, and how the shelter has dealt with any specific issues they have seen.
Thank you for thinking of a homeless dog who needs a place to call his/her own.

Adoption is the way my family always goes. Sometimes this means you inherit someone else's problems, but if you get them young, you're apt to be fine.
They ask that you make a donation usually.
If you don't want to go to the humane society, search "Rescue Leagues" and "Pet Rescue" you can even search to rescue by breed. We adopted a few Doberman's and a Weimeraner in my lifetime.
Just talk to who you adopting from, learn the pet's history. We've gotten a dog that was previously abused and therefore skittish, a dog who picked pockets (that was fun), and a dog who is the biggest sweetheart on the planet.
Good luck!

Great Idea to adopt a dog but be sure that the dog you adopt is compatible with your family and lifestyle. i.e. don't get a dog that high energy and needs a lot of exercise if you don't get out much. Do some research on the type of breeds you are interested in.

getting a dog from a humane society would give an abandoned dog a loving home, but make sure you do your research on dogs and know how to look after one before you think of getting a dog

Absolutely!!!
Some of the best pets come from the Humane Society.
But not knowing the reputation of the one your dealing with ask if the dog has been temperament tested, if not make the request that it be done or that they give you the dog with the understanding that you will have it done and if the results are unsatisfactory you will return it.
Good Luck

you may want to check out craiglist.com as well. just be ready to have plenty time for your dog. You have to keep a schedule and stay with it. Have time to play with the dog, train it as well. I'm in a process right now of my new dogie. They love attention so be ready. Most important you have to give your dog lots of love. If you don't have space because your dog will need their own space in your home or if you won't have time right yet... I would hold off until your ready.
