Serpent was Lucifer who is Satan.

Rev. 12: 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

There are many verses in the Bible that show this to be Satan.
The curse receved by the serpent who would bruise man's heel but the man would bruise his head is one.

Gen.3: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; bit shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

typically when another religion moves into an area or into existence, the first thing it does is demonize former religions. There as the serpent is most likely a god or goddess from another religion. In the area serpent form was very popular for gods. Tiamet was a serpent Babylonian goddess and the Minoans were known to have serpents depicted in the artwork.
So pretty much the snake was an old god being phased out.

Most believers assume the serpent mentioned in the Garden of Eden is the devil in disguise (although the Bible never implicitly states anything of the kind). This belief stems from the idea that the serpent fulfills the devil's role in the lives of men, i.e., undermining God and leading humanity into temptation.
