Bear has constantly been getting up and started limping, but after walking on it for a few minutes, he's back to normal. Lately, he won't respond to his name, and is is too much pain to lay down. My dad refuses to take him to the vet cus suposedly "he's just fine". Does he have a serious problem that for sure needs to be taken care of by a professional?

He could have arthritis ,i cant see your dog from here the only person that can give you an accurate diagnosis is a fully qualified vet which I'm not.

I agree with previous posters- he sounds like he's suffering, which is against the law not to fix (not to mention not kind to a member of the family.) I would check things out- check his paw, see if touching a joint in the leg or hip is the source of the pain or if you can actually feel any swelling. Then call the vet with those details, and see when you can get in. If it's not possible until tomorrow, ask what advice the vet can give you to make Bear more comfortable in the short term, perhaps some aspirin (gotta get dosages straight from a vet, or like another poster says, it could be poison), a towel on over a heating pad, something that could ease his pain. Some extra TLC without invading his space could also provide some assurance that his "people" are paying attention and are going to help. It can be extra scary, same reason little ones can cry nonstop, not to be able to communicate your unhappiness or pain as an animal.

How old is Bear?
I would be highly suspicious that he has arthritis or some sort of joint pain causing his discomfort and if he is at the point where he can't settle then YES he definatley needs to see a vet as soon as possible to get some anti inflammatories (please don't give human meds as this can cause gastro bleeding) and possibly a course of pentosan injections which will help repair the cartlidge.

Sounds like Bear has been injured in the hip. He probably needs to be seen by a vet for some x-rays. Or check his fur for a puncture or something stuck in his hip. We had a dog that was kept outside and he had a huge splinter like thing stuck in his hip. If that's the case a vet needs to remove it.

How old is he? Seems like he's quite aged to me. Probably going deaf and developing arthritis or something similar. You should REALLY take him to a vet to get checked over-all to ensure what the problems are. They might be very cheap to fix, or impossible, but you need to get him to a vet in case anything CAN be helped, and he won't just be left suffering, or his conditions won't worsen with time.

It's too bad about your dad, but once a family takes ownership of any animal, it is their responsibility to take care of it. Period. You should be taking your dog in for yearly check-ups ayway. But if he's really reluctant, why not explain the situation to another reletive and get them to take you to a vet. Your dog depends on you.

My dog was limping and not laying down. We waited to take her to the vet. She had dislocated her hip, and had to get major surgery. If we would have gone to the vet right away, the surgery could have been avoided. Take your dog to the vet!!

Check your dog out to see in you can find the source of his behavior. If you find something relevent, show your father. If you can find nothing and he still seems to have trouble convince someone to get him help.Perhaps you could advise your family that it is against the law to deprive your animal of medical attention. It is your duty as a pet owners to see to it that the animal gets the care it needs.

Take him to the vet! Ask your Mother or neighbor or friend to drive you there if your father refuses to.
