A vitamin is a general term for any of several unrelated organic substances that are necessary for various essential metabolic functions in the human body. None of these essential substances are produced in the body and therefore must be obtained by ingesting certain foods.

The above definition is not exactly precise. We can manufacture Vitamin D, but only in the presence of sunlight. Vitamin K is manufactured in our body by the action of bacteria in our intestine.
