Yes, God condemned magic in several places in the Old Testament...
Deuteronomy 18 is perhaps the most important. They forbade the Israelites from engaging in human sacrifice and in eight specific practices which some have been regarded as occultic. The King James translation is:

"There shall not be found among you anyone that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

Now, some would say, this is black magic and not the type that is done today,,,like pulling a rabbit out of a hat...I would say, if it has the appearance of evil....I would avoid it. Most Christians do consider it evil,,,therefore a sin.

If you can actualy perform magic well thats a miracle.
If you are performing illusion as Doug Henning called it then Its entertainment.
I bet there are some sects of Christianity that would say its a sin.
Catholics are not that Nuts.

If your Doing, Dong magic. Then it could be considered pornography in some states. You might cause a nun to have a heart attack. That would be a venial sin, not a mortal sin as you did not intend to kill the old bat. If you are truly sorry you will be forgiven.

LOL should this be a tragic typo?

The OT condemned sorcery, what most of us now would call necromancy, people who claim to speak to the dead.

Since the Jews do not believe in a heaven that people go to now (the dead wait until judgment day in the ground) then anyone claiming to speak to the dead must have been a charlatan or worse.

Sages of the OT and even Jesus himself were often seen as mages for their god. But theirs is a jealous god and did not like losing worshipers every time a battle was lost.
More and more in Abrahamic religion the emphasis has been that it was god's magic not man's and that anyone claiming otherwise was evil or dangerous.

It depends.

To the best of my knowledge there is nothing sinful about stage magic, sleight of hand, misdirection, and illusion in an entertainment venue.

However real magic is a bit different.

Catholic Church teaches:

All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion.

These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons.

Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity.

With love in Christ.

At my age the dong magic depends upon little blue pills, and the like.

I think you mean "doing" magic. I really don't think it's a sin at all. The word "dong" refers to something much different.

DONG. what a great word.

How would magic, which is based on the ILLUSION of an act, a sin? Did satan give you the power to hide that quarter whereever and skillfully present it when no one is looking? Come on now. Illusion is only a sin if you DONT believe the hype where god is concerned, remember?

So when jesus was parting water and creating an entire populus based off 2 people or having magic apples or creating an entire eco system complete w/ wildlife and habitants in 6 days etc, none of that is considered a sin? Hmm.

If you mean taking a rabbit out of a hat or card tricks .. no.
when in doubt call the parish office.. certainly easier than dealing with some of the answers in this neck of the woods!

I can remember I looked this up a while back. God acknowledged to the people that magic is real, however, He doesn't encourage the use of it for ones own benefit. He in fact encourages the illusions, but not the actual happenings. (Ex. Making it seem like you took an apple from a tree with magic vs. taking the actual apple with magic.) Whatever though. They are your religious beliefs, not mine.
