...for the first time. We took him to the vet and got all his medicine so hopefully they will be gone soon...my question is does this mean there is a flea infestation in the house? should we spray the house or something? and could I possibly get fleas too?

you need to treat the house with a house hold flea spray I'm surprised the vet did not tell you this.
fleas can live in your house for 6 months to a year you kill the fleas with the house hold spray and the eggs live in your carpet and furniture say sofas and you need to spray every week for up to 6 months depending how bad the fleas are.
fleas jump so if your dog has fleas they can jump on you.
you know if your bitten by fleas as you have small red dots on your skin which itch

You may indeed get bitten by fleas, but they do not live on humans so you will not find them in your hair etc.

Yes it's very likely you will need to spray your house. It's estimated that 95% of any flea population lives in the environment - it's where they live and breed, so if you don't spray you're likely to keep seeing them.

Do get a spray from a vets, not a pet store because these don't work. No 'bombs' or 'foggers'! And no sprinkling Borax or salt around.

You may find you need to spray more than once - two treatments a couple of weeks apart, to get the newly hatched flea eggs; most sprays don't kill flea eggs.

If you haven't already gotten bitten then you don't have an infestation most likely. If you had an infestation you would know it. My sister had that and she got bitten a bunch of times. Basically fleas like biting animals so if you get the right kind of medicine the flea will bite the dog and then die. You should be good.

No you can't get fleas. No you don't need to spray if your vet used good flea and tick meds like frontline or revolution. You will notice seeing more fleas on the face and lower fur areas in the next few days. That's the fleas being poisoned and they're eggs use this treatment every month.

You should probably spray the whole house to be safe. start with one room at a time, or wherever the dog has had access to. I am pretty sure humans cannot be infested with fleas. I heard they can't live on human blood.

The fleas will bite you too. Eating raw garlic is said to help, and if they bite you, using a cortisone anti-itch aid after you wipe your skin with white vinegar. Those bites are really itchy.
Fleas don't like -
eucalyptus
tea tree oil
citronella
lavender
Hope you don't have an infestation!

I treat my dogs with Front Line it works into their coats and and spreads into their skin.
As well it does kill the fleas on everything that your dog comes into contact with, carpeting, furniture, etc, or so is advertised.
I own 7 dogs and yes they have had fleas but I have never had a problem in my home even though they are allowed in my home.
Mind you I do not allow dogs on the furniture or the bed.
Good Luck

yes, definetely treat your house with a flea bomb with everyone, including pet out of the house of course!! :) you should also continue with the monthly treatment of whatever flea remedy (revolution, advantage, frontline) that your vet gave you once a month. this will keep the fleas away. i personally use revolution and we have never had fleas. good luck.
