While the Marines are a smaller force than the army, they are by no means inferior. Each branch of the service has missions that are unique to them.

Marines rely on Navy aircraft and the Army relies on the Air Force. Both have their own helicopter branches but the Army's is larger just because of the larger number of soldiers.

You might say the Marine Recon along with Army Ranger's, and select airborne units, are the nations "First Responders"

And no, the Marines didn't come about "sometime around WW2. They existed during the Revolution. Basically soldiers that could also sail.

The Army is just a larger force than the Marines.
And we can both talk smack about the Coast Guard's shallow water sailors :)

The mission of the Army and the Marines are pretty much the same. To locate and close with overwhelming firepower and eliminate it's targets. They train in similar ways for the infantry units. Marines are a smaller force which keeps personnel closer and train harder together. I can't say anything about the Army but as a Marine we do the best we can so everyone can go home. I fought along side Army soldiers during the battle of Fallujah in 2004 and I was glad they were there.

The Army has fixed wing assets, but they do not participate in Combat missions.

The Marines usually enter a combat zone first, and are followed by the Army who maintain the stabalization of that paticular zone. Marines also work with the Navy as security on some of the larger ships. Members of the Marine Corps are also starting to deploy with the Coast Guard in order to learn more humanitarian type missions, so they are not solely considered to be "killers"/

The Marine Corps' proper mission is as a seaborne assault force, going in first and operating more or less within the range of the fleet's guns. The Army's mission is to operate long duration, mass operations far inland. It often builds on the opening created by the Corps; however, it is capable of being employed without the Marines being sent in at all. Too often the two services' missions get intermixed, as in Iraq today.

The Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy, though becoming a separate branch from the Navy in 1947.

Marines are amphibious assault troops, something the Army is ill equiped for. The Marine Corps also has fixed wing combat aircraft, while the Army only has armed helicopters.

These days the marines and the army appear to fight together but I would associate army soldiers with the land and the marines with the sea.

Marines do the job faster and more precise with less funding when ever the executive order is given.

We have more discipline and can take a large force on with only a few marines.

Although the US Army is wellknown throughout and around the globe, The Marines are feared by all those who oppose the US.

Land, Air, and Sea.

The U.S.Marines are just plain old better than the rest

Marines wear funny hats, and march all jacked up. Then there's the ego thing as you can see from their replies.

Really though it's a difference in fighting docterine. The Army is a large overwhelming occuping force, where as the Marines are smaller more moblie and set up to ungage in heavy combat for short periods of time (not counting Iraq). Marines invasion force, Army occuping force.

Marines are taught to follow orders without question and to not be unique in any way.

Soldiers are taught to adapt, improvise and overcome through thinking things through and developing a plan as a team.

Marines are first in to take the ground and secure an entry for the Army to come in and start with a broad range of missions from Intelligence to Psychological Operations, etc.
