Lots of breeds have been owned by royalty, or have had bans on them so only royals and the 'upper class' could own them at one time or another. Here are a few that popped to mind:

Italian Greyhounds were a favorite of Catherine the great.

Japanese Chins were the dogs of Japanese Royalty (and a pair of this breed were gifted to Queen Victoria, this was the first canine gift ever given to the royal family).

Borzois were highly prizes by Russian royals, for centuries they couldn't be purchased, they could only be given as gifts from Tsar.

Those are the ones I thought of off the top of my head, but there have been plenty more. Good luck; I hope that helps!

Pekingese- In China, Pekes were treasured by kings and queens for centuries. "Common" people were forbidden to own them.

Poineranian- Pomeranian's ancestor, came from that part of Germany known as Pomerania, hence the new modern name of Pomeranian. This is a very old breed; pictures of Poms have been found in the tombs of ancient Athens. They were owned by the very rich.

Chihuahua-They were the pets of royalty in Mexico, and may have been used by the Toltec Indians in their court ceremonies.

Pug-In England this little dog became a great favorite of King William III, and later became the pet of many Ladies in England.

Papillon-Papillon were all bred as companion or “lap” dogs. Nobility favored toy dogs and could afford to breed them specifically for leisure pursuits

Afghan Hound-They were owned by royalty and tribesman alike and their main job was to protect the villages, to put food in the dinner pot, or simply to provide outdoors entertainment for nobility.

Bichon Frise-Were bred for royalty, and became very fashionable at French court. They were much sought after by nobility and royals in the 16th century.

Maltese-These dogs were favored by the wealthy and royalty alike and were bred over time to be a companion animal. Some royalty that reportedly owned Maltese were Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, Josephine Bonaparte and Marie Antoinette.

MANY dogs were favored by royalty...many large and many small breeds.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi...Just like my dog. The Queen Of England has several. Check it out. Corgi's have a history of belonging to royalty.
Look up Welsh Corgi's on the Internet.

the dalmation was a coach dog. It walked astride royal coaches. Then it later became the firehouse dog. I think that may be it. I will watch other answers to see if I am wrong
