There is a funny story from the Talmud (text to complement the Torah/OT) where two rabbis are arguing: Talmud, Bava Metzia 59a-b.
The upshot of the story is that R1 makes a statement about the law but is unable to provide a reference from the book so he swears by something else that it is true, R2 says that it does not matter what he swears by unless R1 can provide his resources.
They argue back and forth until finally God, himself, calls down that R1 is right. R2 responds that, not to be rude, but that still does NOT provide the required reference from the book.
