I am a pretty good guitarist who has two acoustic and 2 electric guitars (one synsonic pro series and one shitty fender copy).......i am sick of not having the sound of my friends guitars and I was wondering what is a good step up to the next level within a reasonable price range?

Tricky. What do you want - acoustic, electric or electro acoustic. For electric, get a Fender Squier if a Strat is out of reach, or an Epiphone if you're into the Gibson sound.
For electro acoustic I use Ovation for performing and for acoustic, Takamine, Vintage, Tanglewood are all good makes if a Martin is out of reach. Hope this helps

I wish you would have said what sound you are looking for.I would suggest that you check out a Paul Reed Smith LE.they start at about $400.It will give you a good bluesy rock sound. You can get a low end Jackson for about the same price that will give you a good metal sound, try for a used Jackson though you can get a better guitar for the same $$.If you are after a more modern sound it is really hard to beat Ibanez, and also check out LTD.You should try out all of these guitars that are in your price range then try all of the higher priced ones too. Then go looking in pawn shops, newspapers, and music stores for a used guitar that is not beat up.This way you will know what you are getting and can get the best for your $$$.I currently still have a Jackson Professional series that I bought for $150.I've had this guitar for 6 years and it is my drop D guitar I love it,and I got it used.It would have cost me 800 if I would have bought it brand new.Since then I have bought several guitars my favorite is my Jackson Soloist,I bought it brand new.The store was asking $2165.00.Iwalked out of the store with a case and taxes for $1425.00.So do yourself a favor take your time and try out many. When you find the guitar that you want, and it wants you.Get that one even if it takes a year to pay it off.

A Fender standard Stratocaster is $399 from a Epiphone Les Paul standard is the same price. Depends on what you want from your sound. Both are excellent guitars when set up properly. That is , if electric is what you want.
