Considering he moved around a lot, I think a dog would be more suitable becasue it could walk along with him. Plus dogs are more social than cats and a friendly animal would be more beneficial when recruiting followers.

Hmm, depends on the version. I'd say he pretended to like cats so he could hang out with Mary Magdalene. I've done the same in similar situations.

Honestly I think he loved all the animal he created them, then he had Noah build an ark for the animals so they would not die in the flood.
