Ok, I know it was just a cartoon, but I believe it was Sylvester who put salt on Tweety's tail so that he couldn't fly away, and a man who happened to be in the room said, "That's true, you know." I've remembered that for allll these years and wondered if there's really any truth to that. Is there?

When I was a little child, I was told that if you put salt on a bird's tail, you can catch it. Of course I never could get salt on their tails. Eventually my mom elaborated by saying that if you can get close enough to put salt on its tail, you are close enough to catch it!
I think it was just a story parents used to tell kids, like the story that eating the crust of the bread will make your hair curly. Girls at least want curly hair, so they don't leave the crust from their sandwiches the way they might otherwise.

It's truth in jest. Kinda like a joke. The idea is that if you can get close enough to put salt on the tail, you can catch the bird.

It used to go like this "you know how to catch a bird?
NO HOW?
"just put salt on it's tail feathers"
hehehe

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Pouring salt on a snail works pretty damn well, but I've never heard about it with birds.

Absolutely none. Either the salt granules roll off the feathers, or they can shake it right off.
