I mean some of them look like it is a day at the beach practically instead of what really happened. Do we forget how much he suffered for us?

Qualman ---by the actions of kids today I'd say they need to be scared. Maybe they would not grow to shoot up schools and just play nonstop murder computer games and maybe every other word out of their mouth wouldn't begin with an F.

BrotherM---not only did I not ask for your "opinion" you do not have a clue what your talking about---what , in the desert the Israelites were to put up a snake on a pole then take the snake down and stare at the pole? Try to understand what you read.

I did see one once. It was gory. But it reminded me how we really do like to try to "clean up" the messiness of love and in doing that we always trivialize or romanticize it. We forget that His sacrifice wasn't neat and pretty.
Thanks for the reminder.

First, a correction for johnandeileen2000: The appropriate term of insult to Catholics is "graven" images, not "craven" images. The prohibition in Exodus, in an accurate and complete form, reads:
Ex 20:4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them . . ."
If you think a sculpture of Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God, being tortured to death is an idol, I feel sorry that you have learned so little about the scriptures. St. Paul wrote in Galatians 6:14, "May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world."
The image in the Passion of the Christ was one of the most graphic images of Jesus' horrendous death:

Here is a fairly realistic rendering in sculpture:

While sparing the faint-hearted the full horror of the visage of the crucified Christ, I think Christians need to be reminded that this was, literally, an excruciating death on our behalf.
Cheers,
Bruce

We are well aware of the suffering and sacrifice Christ made for His people, the wrath of God poured out on Him. But, we focus more on His resurrection, that He is alive and will come again. That is why the Protestant churches have crosses, not crucifixes, He is not there anymore and is not being sacrificed over and over again, He is risen.
Rom 6:10 For in that He died, He died to sin once for all; but in that He lives, He lives to God.
Heb 7:27 who has no need, as do the high priests, to offer sacrifices day by day, first for His own sins, then for those of the people. For He did this once for all, offering up Himself.
Heb 10:10 by which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Heb 10:11 And indeed every priest stands day by day ministering, and often offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
Heb 10:12 But He, offering but one sacrifice for sins, "sat down" in perpetuity "at the right hand" of God,
Heb 10:13 from then on expecting "until His enemies are placed as a footstool" of His feet. (Psa. 110:1)

Christ lost enough blood to die along the way
The crown of thorns was poisoned. An ordinary man would have died long before the crucifixion actually took place
His shoulder was so abraded by the cross that his clavicle was exposed.
It is a complete mystery to me that He died. I think that Him just saying "Into your hands I commend my spirit." is what did it.
How can one kill God?

It is interesting that one of our most important symbols is a man being slowly and cruelly executed alone, stripped naked and humiliated. It is also pretty profound and shows the incredible understanding God has of human beings and the level that he loves us and his willingness to suffer to convince us of his love. And remember that he didn't have to die like this even at the last moment he could have walked away. and that he even forgave the man who drove nails into his hands and the spear through his side. I know all you non-theists think we're nuts but we just think we're lucky and loved.

Craven images were ridiculed by Jesus, the Catholic Church is overburdened with them as it is.
