Retractable?
Just a plain leash?
What brand is your leash? How long is yours? Long ones for a specific place and time? Short ones for a specific time and place?

No retractable leashes - they don't allow good control of the dog and they can break. I think they are a bad idea.

We use 4-6 foot long heavy nylon leashes. One dog uses a Halti because though he walks nicely on a leash 90% of the time he sometimes startles at things and he is very large and can hurt me if he pulls when he freaks at something. The other uses a regular nylon collar. She heels nicely and doesn't startle like our other dog.

I have a retractable leash because my dog is small and quick and she seems to be tangling herself in a regular leash every couple steps no matter how much I am controlling the leash and how well she is walking. The brand is aspen something it was from petco. The leash is 20 feet when fully extended but unless we are running around playing in the park or my backyard she usually only gets 5 ft of leash at the most.

I use a 10ft piece of rope. Its tied so that I can slip one loop on the collar and the other around my wrist. I then place my portion of it behind me and over me shoulder, then around my arm so I can easily shorten or lengthen it quickly.

Its proven to be stronger than any of the inexpensive leashes, and offers a great deal of control since the length can be varied manually without an easy to break retractable.

The only problem is that it looks like crap, but he's cute enough that it doesnt really matter.
I also have a shorter leash that is store bought. It is rarely used since it is only used off our property and he's rarely leashed if out (either in the car or out camping typically, so no need).

Good tips Anabelle! I didn't think about the wrappers in the yard!

6 ft Double Loop leash is my main leash. I have dozens - all colors and sizes. I use 20-30 ft for recall.

I don't like retractable leashes. They don't let you have enough control.

Mostly I use a leash that I got for Christmas last year, it's braided and it reflects light for safety. It gives me good control over Judge, which is really needed because he's stronger than he looks and if he sees a rabbit, he runs for it. I have a retractable leash that I use when we're relaxing and he can explore. This way, he can go around more freely, but I still have some control over him.

I use regular long leashes because I walk in my neighborhood and they are chis so they really dont need retractable leashes . I almost lost one of my chi a yr ago cause the retract broke . good luck .
