Neither Hamlin nor NASCAR know how exactly water got into the fuel tank. They're still trying to figure that out.

Not only did Denny have water in his fuel tank but so did Dave Blaney and even Jimmie Johnson had a little.

Before NASCAR finds out what caused it, they're trying to figure out what it is. The water wasn't the normal clear color, it was a rusty brown color.

We'll just have to wait and see.

The source of the water has not been traced but several things could have caused this on being heat.If the fuel tank heats this could cause the fuel to condensate thus causing the water build up.
Then one of the fuel cans could have had water in it drom being cleaned but not properly dried.
So the cause is a mystery that NASCAR is checking. It is speculated that water or traces of water was found in other cars also.

...At first there was all kinds of possibilities being explored. They thought sabotage but turns out the water was rusty or muddy looking. The possibility remains that either it was from a truck that delivered the fuel or the underground tanks have a leak.

...The whole deal is still being examined as they have not come to a conclusion yet.

I think Denny and Paris were at it again and as they stumbled by DENNY'S car in the weeeweeee hours of the morning at the track, they thought it was SMOKES and DENNY and PARIS both made a deposit in "low and behold" his own gas tank!!!!
