I have no problem with someone who breeds to better the quality of the breed, has lots of experience and knowledge of the breed, shows their dogs to championship, screens their dogs for genetic defects, gets vet care for their dogs and pups, carefully screens prospective owners and provides a contract of sale including a health guarantee.
Anyone doing less than this shouldn't be breeding.

I don't think a good breeder actually makes money on their puppies. After all, the parnets are screened or at least responsible breeders do the screening. I know my puppy's breeder didn't make any money on that litter, judging by the thick packet for my records and my vet that I received when we picked her up. I am not against breeders per se but I think if you're going to breed it should be done right or not at all. After all, if there are no breeders, where are people going to get that puppy who is needed for a very speicfic purpose like herding livestock . That being said, most of my dogs have come from shelters because as they are family members and companions first, breed wasn't of the outmost importance nor did I need a reasonable guarentee that they would have a particular trait for a particular purpose. One of the reasons we actually sought out a breeder for my daughter's dog was that I wanted a guantee that our new family member would be healthy but disinterested in birds as I have some and that was what we received.

There are some breeders who keep their dogs in terrible conditions and make the dogs have a litter every heat because they are in it strictly for the money. However, there are also great breeders who only have 1 or 2 outstanding females that they breed to produce more show dogs or high quality family dogs. Breeders are a huge generalization and you can't really put them all into one category. The people who breed dogs and charge only what is costs in time, vet bills, and registration are the best breeders. They do their research and make sure that there dogs come from good lines and don't have any genetic problems.

You can love the puppies you produce, but that is why you go OUT OF YOUR WAY to place them in loving homes with people that have been waiting for them for a LONG time.
And if I was using my dogs for money, I would not be breeding the RIGHT way so that I could make a tidy profit on each litter!!!!!!! I would not spend hundreds on health clearances, I would not spend THOUSANDS on showing a dog and even MORE money getting working titles.
Then, I could be breeding every bit ch every heat so that I could make a nice living off the dogs.
tzafed10....Good breeders are NOT the ones filling the shelters. Not noe single puppy that I have ever produced is in a shelter or will ever be. I take back any of my dogs for life...no questions asked. And the people that are buying puppies from me would not be getting a dog from a shelter if they could not get a Newf puppy. They want a specific breed to do specific things. That is why people select purebreeds. And believe it or not, there are some people that do not want a shelter dog and the issues it brings.
So move on and place the blame where it needs to be...on BYB and puppymills.

I love my puppies, which is why I SPEND a lot of money to make sure the get the best, and I spend a lot of time making sure they go to the best possible homes.
When I do a breeding, it's because I want a puppy for myself. Frankly, if my b*tch had only ONE puppy, but it was a good one, I'd be happy, because placing the rest of the litter is stressful (yes, I'm a worrywart). But there are lots of other pups in the litter besides the one or two that I keep, and I can't keep them all. I'm NOT giving them away, I've put too much into them for that. I want people to value them as much as I do.
As for making money from breeding.....the reason I haven't had a litter lately is I can't afford to. Yep, it costs me....stud fee, testing, vet bills, food, time off work......maybe I'll get it back when I sell the pups, maybe I won't.

I hope some of the reputable breeders on this site answer this... they will tell you that they often don't even break even when they breed dogs. The people who make money are the ones who do no health checks on the parents, don't provide proper vet care and nutrition to the litter, and get rid of the puppies ASAP to avoid putting any more money into them. When done properly, breeding is not a profitable business.

I think you should do some research and come back and ask a more informed question.
Reputable breeders don't make money off a litter, they don't breed to make money. Of course they will sell them, why would they give away a dog when everyone knows how free dogs are treated?

I whelped my first litter of pups over 19 years ago. I've had a total of 7 litters. I made money on puppies ONCE. I cleared a whole 19 cents an hour... and that did NOT include my then husband's time, my children's time, the neighbors time or any of the other people who played with and socialized the pups.
In order to make money whelping puppies you have to cut corners somewhere.. and I refuse to do that.

I have no problem with reputable breeders. The ones that research, that don't breed for money, and who know what they are doing. I have problems with BYBs and unethical mutt breeders who sell mixed breed pups at purebred prices.

When I first got to Germany I did not know my way around the country. I saw an add in the paper saying they would deliver the dog to me. They brought her she had conjunctivitis and was filthy they were charging way too much, but I could not let her go back w/him. I spent more money at the vet after I bought her. Lesson learned. My second dog I went through what is similar to a parent club for a breed to AKC, but has diffrent names here. They referred me to a breeder 2 hours away. I contacted them by email, went to the home for an interview, they contacted me the next day, and said I could have one. I went back to their home they showed me the dog they thought would fit with me, hey showed me how to make meals for her, and gave me some of it, they gave me bags of the kibble they use too, she showed me how to groom her for her age, they showed me w/a scanner her microchip # and that it matched the paperwork, they did the paperwork for her passport and mailed it to me a few weeks later, they showed me the paperwork on their dogs for hips and eyes, the same for the puppy, theyshowed me the pup's sire's web page and copies of his paperwork, 6 months later I went back for them to show me how to groom her for the stage of life she was at. They email me and I still email them pics. Also when I picked her up they gave me 2 special combs, ear cleaner, thinning scissors, these round tip scissors, special bowls for spaniels, tons and I mean tons of food, toothbrush. Went over her lineige with me over the internet and it matched her paperwork. I got to see pics of her mom, dad, grandparents, great grandparents at shows with all these ribbons and standing that way they hold them with the head and tail all straight. She showed me how to do it, and I still do it with my dog and my husband and I laugh and tell her to give us her show dog pose..lol. IMO paying the extra money for a really good breeder and dog is worth it. Good breeders rule. My breeder even told me, if you get sick or something happens the dog comes back to me. I had to sign a contract saying that. I can't spade my dog because that is part of the contract. So there are some rules they have but it is worth it!
