He came to my office unanounced with some other staff person and looked around. I saw them and looked up. I said are you checkiing out this p-hole we call an office? My tone was light and joking. He responds by saying at least you have a job. then he goes c'mon I have consultants here. But by his initial answer I was taken aback. He asked me a question about the office and then left. I may have been somewhat out of place but if he is threatening my job I feel that is harsh. Should I take that comment as a threat to my job? Is it legal for employers to say things like that to employees?

For those of you who can't simply answer the question please move on to another question. If this was called yahoo! Opinions then I would understand the extra lip.

The director and I have a better relationship than many of you know and the harsh nature of your judgements shows a lack of the ability to completely evaluate a situation. We have worked things out with a civil dialouge.

He was probably not threatening your job, and it's completely legal for him to say something like that. Just learn a lesson about how to interact with management and move on.

The way I see it, you asked him a stupid question and he gave you a stupid answer. Top caliber managers are always open to suggestions and take it as a challenge to himself. You as an employee must also take initiatives and not criticism. If you're not happy with your job, then resign and look for another job. You cannot make joke to your boss infront of other employee. Show respect.

To be perfectly honest you showed complete disrespect no matter what attitude you think you where portraying. This in front of others , consultants, Think your time there is limited, and yes legal to do. Sorry my opinion no class, no thought, and way out of line in front of visitors. Myself would have fired you next day

i really dont see why you would speak to managment like that in the first place. if you do loose your job its your own fault and its perfectly legal for him to say that or even to fire you for insubordination. if it does happen take it as a lesson your not a child any more you should know when and where to say certain things.

He could have fired you for insubordination, and in my opinion, probably should have. You exhibited a very poor attitude and disrespect. I'd say you are on thin ice.
