Catholics are Christians. However, not all Christians are Catholic. Other than having slightly different rituals, wording and organization, there are probably more similarities than differences between Catholic Christians and other Christian denominations.

There are several branches of Christianity: Catholicism, Protestantism and Eastern Orthodox are the main branches. Then there are others: Gnostic (from the Greek work, gnosos - knowledge - these are spiritual people and followers of books, in addition to the Bibile, that were not included in the standard Bible), Coptic (Ethiopian Christians), Mormons, Christian Scientists and many smaller sects.

The difference between Roman Catholicism and, say, Protestantism, is that Protestantism has "the word of the Lord" as its main focus and does not recognize a central leader. Catholicism does recognize a central leader, the Pope, that is based on the fact that St. Peter, an apostle of Jesus, is considered to be the first pope and vicar of Jesus Christ. Most of the popes, including today's pope, are considered descendants in the tradition and faith of St. Peter. Catholics also recognize and have more of an interest in the different persons that are God and in the Saints and faithful that have believed in and promoted Christianity over the last 2000 years: The Holy Trinity, God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Apostles of Jesus Christ and all the Saints that followed. Catholicism has also been around a lot longer. Catholicism is the first successful organized branch of Christianity to form based on the actions of the early christians before 300 A.D.. Then, Eastern Orthodox Christianity formed in the Byzantine Empire ( the Eastern Roman Empire - consisting of modern day Greece and the Balkans, Turkey, Russia, the Middle East, Egypt and Libya), after the Roman Empire fell, and has also survived to the present day. Catholicism grew from the ashes of the fallen western half of the Roman Empire (consisting of what is modern day Italy, France, Britain, Belgium, Netherlands, the Rhine valley of Germany, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia) . Over a thousand years later, Martin Luther began what came to be known as the Protestant Church in Germany. The Protestant Churches were formed to "protest" the obvious corruption attacking and plaguing the Catholic Church in the 1500s in Medieval Europe and to contest various beliefs and practices of Catholicism. Protestantism spread from Germany to Scandinavia, England, Scotland, Belgium, the Netherlands and North America. Both Catholicism and Protestantism continue to spread the belief in one God, in Jesus Christ, and in the word of the Lord, throughout the world.

All these branches of Christianity have survived over the centuries, so that today, we a have a very rich and complex religious history, all started from the same source - Jesus, Judaism, the early Christians, and monotheism - belief in one God.

Other than the differences, there are many similiarities: belief in one God, belief in Jesus Christ and His second coming, and belief in the Bible - old and new testaments.

Ok, so Catholics are Christians. Protestants are Christians. So, to revise your question "What is the difference between protestants and catholics?"
Once difference: Protestants do not believe that a man like a Pope is a proper intermediary between them and God.

Catholics are Catholic Christians. They have more to share than those who protest Catholics.
If we call ourselves Christians, those who follow Christ Jesus, then we should act like Christians and love one another rather than be led into revisionist faiths. Jesus prayed that we would be "ONE" as He and the Father are one.
It is time for all Christians to stand together against all that opposes Christ.
May God bless you with His truths, His Love and His Mercy in Jesus' name I pray.

Catholics (Eastern Orthodox & Roman Catholic) are the root Christainity. There was a big stuggle 4 power in 1400-1600's which lead to masses disowning the authority of the Pope.

So, Christain's (most denominations like Prodestant, Angelican, Baptist, Luthern ... ect) tend to interprerate social and techological advances without a center while Catholics are slow moving to interprete, but all are lead by the Pope.

...The Roman church, sadly has placed upon it's followers many, many points of religious bondage that Jesus never intended to have us have upon us... The Roman church has, over the millenniums "skewed" Gods Word to hold it's followers captive in it's dogmas, doctrines and papal bulls that are all non Scriptural and for the most part religious nonsense... The Catholic faith has introduced "icons" and religious gymnastics that rival David Copperfield... Jesus clearly said "He was the Way, no one comes to the Father but by the Son"... (not by Mary or Tom, or Dick or Harry)... He clearly said... "call no man father, except He which is in Heaven". The Roman church today, continues to struggle with it's traditions of celibate priests (non Scriptural) that have cost "them" millions in law suits because of the wanton lust of it's priests... and the untold infanticide of those born to Nuns.
Follow Scripture... not the "rants" of the old men of Rome...
