First of all don't listen to all of the rest of these bozos.
Adopting a dog is a great, great thing to do. Also no one can tell you what kind of things to tell your parents. It is in your heart. Also you have to decide wheater or not you are responible or mature enough.

Start with your 9 year old. Old dog can learn new tricks. And you can practice on the present dog and make your learning misstate now. You present dog will appreciate the extra attention and he could surprise you. When you have established that you are serious maybe your parents will come around about a new puppy. Show them you are willing to do the work.
Puppy can be very expensive and that I'm sure is something that enters you parents minds when it may not be something you think about. Puppy need food and medical care and that can be a great expensive at times.
Luck to you on your new endeavor.

Do what most kids do, wear "em down!! Or point out that the older dog will not be around forever and may enjoy a little friend for a while. Especially when everyone goes out,and he/she has a bit of companionship. If your brother isn't living with you, that shouldn't factor in to the equation. Good Luck! :)

It took me 21 years to get my first dog. I used to put up the same fight. I never won that one living at home. I learn sometimes things are better off later when you wait for them. My parents didn't allow me to have anything but cats. Not even another hamster after my first one died. They made me give my iguana up that my grandfather had given me for my Birthday one year. Some parents just don't want more then one dog to deal with. Or any pets at all.

Tell them you can sense that your dog is getting lonely and needs a companion. Or tell them there's a lonely puppy at the shelter that needs an older companion. Or tell them they need another "kid" in the family.

tell them it would give you something to work with and love as well as letting you other dog have as much love as a puppy. And if you adopt one from a rescue center you are saving it from death.

Stress how important it is to you and how it can build character, responsibility, etc. And that you'll always clean up after it.
