Great question. Same reason we have funerals: to make the living feel better.

Your question remembers me a story I heard once:
"An American went to China and once passing in front of a cemetery, saw a person putting rice on a headstone, and the American asked:
-Why do you put rice by the tomb if the dead cannot come out to eat it??
And the Chinese said:
-For the same reason you put flowers when the dead cannot enjoy them..."

Different flowers have different symbolic meaning. Some are for remembrance, others for love, etc. I throw flowers into the river where my grandmother's ashes were dumped and jokingly say "here's some flowers for ya, old bat." Not out of disrespect but that's the type of humor she had - she referred to herself as an old bat. She was a cocky little spitfire when she was alive and I'd expect her to be the same in death.

To quote Sue Ane Nivens from the Mary Tyler Moore show - what would you suggest, dear? Fruit?
The flowers are a remembrance of people we've lost. Flowers are beautiful and, if you ignore the fact that you've ripped them out of the ground, alive. They're a reminder of spring, which for most people is a sign of rebirth. It's a memorial.

It is in memory of a family member or friend. We know our loved ones are not in the grave, only their remains. Their spirits are with the Lord.

For me, it is a sign of respect to those I loved, just as it is when I put the American flag on all the graves of my ancestors who fought in the Civil War.

As a sign that we are honoring and remembering our deceased loved ones...but sometimes it is a competition too, with other families, to show who "does more" for their dead. Sad, but I've seen it.
I've seen people steal and move floral arrangements from other graves to their own families, etc. sorta sad.

That is a good question honestly. I thin kit is just to make things look nice. MAke where they rest peaceful. There is probably a deaper meaning than that, but I am not aware of it. God bless.
