my daughter and i rescued a dog from being hit by a car on saturday. it was really cold outside, so i just didn't have the heart to let it wander around. we asked most of our neighbors if they knew who the dog belonged to. no one seemed to know. it became apparent to us the dog was not housetrained after it peed on my couch. i have been keeping the dog in my dog's crate and feeding/watering it. i let it out for a few minutes to take it outside to go potty. it has been doing ok, but i don't want to chance it peeing on my furniture again. i called animal control and he knows whos dog it is. and is picking it up this afternoon. so, my question is am i being mean by keeping it crated up till they get here?

EDIT: i do let her play outside and my kids of course are playing with it. she is certainly not being neglected, at least by us she's not, lol. she is a cutie, though.

Absolutly not, you deserve a star for your kindness. The crate is to protect it, im sure the owners of the dog will be more than pleased if they knew, and im sure your have good intentions. Or the dog wouldnt be in the crate, it would be irrisponsible if you didnt keep him in there.
If you still feel bad just give him a treat, few pats on the head and maybe 5 minutes of play time flollowed my a potty break, then back into the crate.
Your doing the right thing, I appreciate what your doing for the family who lost their dog, I know what it feels like to loose a pet, and thinking that you may not get it back, but then it shows up after hours of aggony and you feel as if you may burst with happiness.
Im sure other people here also know what im talking about...

no I woudnt expect you to do any more juust wait till the owners come but maybe you can somehow see if the owners are reasoposible cuz it did get hit by a car...What was it doing out by it self. I ahve rescued 2 dogs that I have found wandering alone. One ran acroos a very big street and could have gotten hit. Before i had a dog I kept a dog I found outside until the owner arrived but the wriedest thing happened it ran away!! It was in the backyard where the fence is and everything and I came out and it was gone! Then about 2 hours later I came out agian to check if the dog hadnt came back and it did!! That was one wierd dog tho!! The other dog I rescued i kept on a leash in my backyard also. Good Luck. And before the owner come try to give the dog some more fresh air.

Absolutely not. If the owner is coming to pick it up, it's best to keep it confined in a smaller space for several reasons: (1) the dog does not get attached to you or vice versa, (2) you are protecting your belongings from further damage, (3) the dog is safe and out of harm's way, and (4) the dog will feel safe in the crate and relax until his owner comes for him. Also, if you have another dog, I would try to keep them separated so your dog does not "taunt" the crated one. Make sure he has enough time outside in the fresh air and love on him a bit (we all like that).

If the dog was at the shelter he would be in a cage all day- and with much less attention than it sounds like your family has been giving him. Plus, he's not at risk for being put to sleep by staying with you. Give him as much time out of the crate as you can- you mentioned you already have a dog, do you have gates for sectioning off parts of your house? Even if you don't, you can try restricting him to a room with hard floors that would be easy to clean.

No. Being cramped up in a crate all day is wonderful compared to being cold, hungry, wet and in possible danger. If it's putting up a fuss, why not just let it outside for a bit. Or even take it for a walk (with a leash) to tire it so it wouldn't mind a crate.

No you're not being mean. Not knowing the dog well, you are just playing it safe by keeping it crated. Crating will keep it from trying to bolt back outside anytime you open the door and keep your furniture safe.

No!!! I think it was really nice that you even took it in to your home. If you would have left it out there it had a good chance of really getting hit by a car. Most people would have let the dog go. Good job you did the absolute right thing!!!!!!

I don't think you are being mean at all. If I had a new dog I would use the crate anyway for crate training. I hope he finds a good home :o)

No, you did a good thing by taking it in. A little while in a crate isn't going to hurt the dog at all.
