I have been getting pluracy for the last three years around this time and I have it yet again. My doctor still isn't sure why I keep getting it. I've been put on medications all three years and it doesn't seem to help much. What can I do?

Pleurisy is generally not more serious than the underlying condition causing it. Every organ in the body has two layers covering it. It has the parietal layer and the visceral layer which is closest to the organ. In the lungs, the space between these two layers is called the plural space. It is generally filled with an extremely thin layer of fluid. The double-layered pleura protects and lubricates the surface of the lungs as they inflate and deflate within the rib cage. When a person inhales or exhales that thin layer of fluid allows for the two layers of the pleural membrane to slide gently past each other. However when there is inflammation these two layers rub together like two pieces of sandpaper. This causes the pain on inhalation or exhalation.

Another thing that can occur is a Plural Effusion. This is when more fluid collects in that thin fluid between those two layers on the lungs. This is usually drained by a thorencentesis.

All of that to say pleurisy is usually the result of another illness. So in order to keep from getting the pleurisy, you and your doctor need to find out the underlying cause. It is my advice that you seek the advice and help of a lung doctor, a Pulmonologist.

I wish you good luck.

Pleurisy is when the lining between the lungs and the ribs dries out and breathing causes the lungs to rub the ribs which is very painful. I have always had an antibiotic from the doctor and used heat, rest, and an anti-inflammatory pain reliever.

it is spelled pleurisy, and I will bet it is related to an allergen of some sort. I used to get it every year too, then I found out I was allergic to the filters we were using in our furnace, we changed out the filters and I've not had pleurisy since.
