How can you tell which immigrants are here illegally or legally just by looking or causally interacting with them? Many of you complain about the Mexican cashier, or the noisy Latino neighbor. Yet unless you make a habit of asking for social security numbers ( which you verify )you really have no idea who is here legally or not.

Or do you have some type of illegal-dar?

I would like everyone to understand that I am only referring to what I have seen people on this site write about illegal aliens when I say a "noisy Latino" neighbor. I have heard people in this forum refer to illegals as bad neighbors that listen to music to loud- I want to know how those people know that the neighbor is illegal, (I am not in any way insinuating the Latinos are bad neighbors)

good observation, it's exactly what i'd like to know.

i'm half hispanic and half white, and my (legal) hispanic family lives on the border of Texas/Mexico. Thier constantly getting asked whether thier legal or not. It really bothers me, I would also like to know what makes me just automatically assume 'mexicans' are illegal or not.

You can't tell by individual. However, we are told by statistics, such as that 50% of Mexican nationals in this country are here illegally (per our government). Then we can know the number of Mexican nationals in our school and compute a major impact on ESL and intervention programs, and can see how funds have been shifted from gifted programs and language classes for our own children to support ESL programs. As things stand now in LAUSD, when kids graduate middle school, ours are the only children in the room who are NOT bilingual. That is a change from when I, my father and my grandparents went through the same school system, and had choices of language classes in middle school. Now there are none.

Plus, when we try to GET hard numbers we are told that even asking is somehow improper. We don't need to know specifically 'who' to know impacts.

There is no way for the average person to tell who is legal and who is not. You certainly cant tell by their actions. Anybody can be loud, noisy, or ignorant. As far as illegals go, they should enter this country legally like the majority of immigrants do. It is not that easy to go through imnmigration to get into the US. It is not fair for some to go through the process while others sneak in.

At the risk of sounding racist -- we can ALL pick them out. You can too. You just don't want to admit it. It's pretty apparent that my Mexican-American (I hate hyphenating Americans, but I'm making a point) hairdresser is legal. It's also equally apparent that the Latinos hanging outside Home Depot and 7-11 waiting for someone to hire them by the truckload ARE illegals.

Illegal-dar? I'm pretty sure DAR is legal.

Booman makes a point. Identifying them is the responsibility of those appointed to enforce our laws. But they're not keeping up. In fact, many are intentionally (and in violation of other laws) refusing to try.

As for me and many people I know, the information comes as a result of business transactions such as papers filed for medical care, renting or buying a home, applying for work, sending kids to school, etc.

Based on that, I'm aware of hundreds I've dealt with being illegal. But this is a sanctuary city and is filthy and crime-ridden. Surrounding cities and towns have spoken up, changed laws and are clean, low-crime, higher-pay (costs are the same so legals must be working a little harder or smarter), and traffic accidents are much less frequent.

Big 'ol honkin' surprise, ain't it?

Perhaps Latinos are just bad neighbors in general. I know one thing for sure, when I wear my Border Patrol hat around San Antonio,I may not be able to tell who is Illegal, but I can sure tell whose side they're on.

If they are adult that can't speak the English language, that is a good place to start.

I realize Mr. Bush would not know where to start on this issue. He don't have a clue.
