Maybe the trick or treaters have to pay indulgences to get their relatives out of Purgatory. So instead of getting candy, they have to give it.

How many people can get out of Purgatory for a few tootsie rolls and a box of Dots?

No, I am afraid that corruption has reached such grave and monumental proportions in the Catholic Church that, at this time, the little Italian trick or treaters, or as they say, trickattorias or treaterinis, are under church law to divide their Halloween loot into sections of good candy and bad candy, and the Pope gets first dibs on one tenth of all the country's children's candy.

The Pope gets special dibs on 3 Muskateers bars, claiming they are needed to represent the Holy Trinity at Mass Practice.
