We moved one city over 15 months ago. I got a library card in the new city, which is also a new county. We moved in July back to the original city/county. The library was updating addresses, so I gave my new one and they told me I have to pay $30 a year to use the library and I can only take out 25 or fewer books at a time. This library is 10 mintues from our house. The library in our new city is almost 40 minutes away (you actually have to get on the highway). So anyway, I called this new library and let them know I used to have a card in that county, but it's been over a year, so what do i need to do? I would need a drivers license with current address and something else with a photo ID, and a current bill of some sort with current address and my name. I have no other photo ID and I have no mail in my name. My husband gets it, as I'm a homemaker. So I asked if my husband could get one and I use it and they said no.
Is this normal? We love the library.

Some libraries are only free for residents of the locality like a township or a county or a city because the library budget is taken from taxes, and they don't want residents feeling cheated and/or they don't have a large collection. About all the ID, maybe they have had a lot of theft. You might check to see if there have been cuts in the library's budget recently and when they initiated this policy, and then complain to your City Council, and tell them that the three most important documents an American can have are a birth certificate, passport, and library card.

Well I never heard of having to pay a library 30 dollars for use. That's crazy. As for the ID and mail yeah I had to do that to before I got a library card.

Libraries stopped giving out fines for late returned books some years ago, at least most libraries did. But people have still misused their services, especially those people who visit from nonlocal areas (these people tend to get items and not return them). They are simply trying to insure in some manner that the privilege of using the library isn't misuse so much, so making certain of a person's ID and their residence is a necessary step.

All you should have to do is show a valid drivers license with the correct address. If the address is in the area of the library that is all they should need. I have never heard of paying for library services. It is as if they are treating you like you don't live there. If you have trouble contact your local congressman, state senator, etc.

just got back from trying to get a library card, wth, yes, now you need driver's id AND 2 pieces of certified mail???? I just moved here, and I don't get mail myself, I live at home.....all this just to be able to read??? no wonder no one does it anymore...way to shoot yourself in the foot library!!!, btw, I would be ok with asking for license but why should the library get access to my personal info like bills, banking statements, or mail (if I had any)????

This is a little excessive but they may be having budget issues. You should look into getting a state issued ID if you are not eligible for a driver's license. People ask me for my ID all the time for every little thing I do. Maybe your husband could put a bill in your name.

That is not normal. When my family moved, my parents just had to bring a utility bill in one of their names and then my brother and i just needed our parents signatures. It cost like $2 just that one time and there was never any limit on the books we could take out. Sounds like your library is a little paranoid.

Thats strange. At my library...they litterally just take your info and give you a card. Theres no...ID anything...you only have to pay money when you have late books or lost your card. That seems like an extreme library.

Yes it is normal. We have to do the same here for our library. Just take your Driver's License and your last years tax information/return. You should be listed on your joint tax return. If not you should be listed on your joint bank account. Take them your current statement with both your names and your new address.
