I just saw today a gray hair!

The thing is, my dad didn't get grays until he was 50! My mom when she was 45!

WTF is happening??

Super worried.

Is this a sign of a disease??

Thanks.

I have had a white hair here and there since i was 17. My hair is dark brown. They say when you pull one white hair out 2 grows back.
Anyhow it could be nothing like me, one here and there not completely covered, i am 27 years old now and i have never dyed my hair
Some people get white hair prematurely, my papa went completely white headed when he was 20 years old.

This happens to many people at many different ages. It is not cause for alarm. It's a simple process the body has ceased.

Let me explain:

Hair fibers are composed of a tightly fused meshwork of cells filled with a hard protein called keratin. Deep lying cells in the hair root produce keratinized cells that move upward through hair follicles. Melanocytes (contain and form the pigment melanin-which gives our skin color) are located at the root of the hair follicle, and they donate the melanin pigment to the cells of the hair fiber. Hair turns grey when the melanocytes stop producing melanin (which could be for many many reasons).

So, for this particular hair follicle - your shaft(visible part of the hair) of hair is now grey. Don't listen to the rumors that if you pluck it 10 will grow in it's place. That is scientifically ridiculous! Each follicle controls itself, not its neighboring follicle.

Don't fret - it's not worth it. There are bigger things in life to stress over.

Hope this helps you!

It's not a sign of disease, but go back a generation or two on either side in your family. Someone was probably prematurely gray. My Grandma was gray in her 20s. Mine started in high school and I was salt and pepper in my 20s and gray by 27. It skipped my Mom totally (her daughter). It never bothered me. I'm a redhead now and never would have dreamed that I shoulda been born one! It is ME 100%!!!

It might be nothing, Muffy. Some people are just prematurely grey. My mother spoke of having a few grey hairs as early as 13.

If it's really worrying you, you might want to get a check up. But I've known women who looked rather mousy in 'young' colors, who were positively gorgeous in grey or white.

I hope this is reassuring at least!

no I have a gray patch for about 16 years....(I have the devils mark according to my grandma but....) normally it comes from a lack of protein...in your food not in your shampoo.. try a spoonfull of peanut butter everyday for 2 months and it should improve your hair alot....also try to wash hair frequently if you use alot of hairspray or such...

Hair grows white when the color pigment (melanin) ceases to be produced in the hair follicle and small air spaces take its place. Please check out http://useinfo-grayhair.blogspot.com/ for more info.
