Punch a big scary guy in the face and start running....not in the nads though since he won't be able to chase you due to gasping.

Map out a 2 or 3 mile route and make it your goal to run that whole thing by a certain time...4-6 weeks is achievable. I would start by walking to warm up, and add 1-2 minutes of jogging or more, then walk when you feel you need to catch your breath. Do this at least every other day, or daily, if you are able. You should see a huge difference if you push yourself within the month. Also, it's great because you can see your progress as well. Another thing that helped me was signing up for a 5K race with a friend or family member and training for that race gave me something to work towards and look forward to.

I'd recommend using a good source to log your running, and then do something fun with the results. For instance, I use the website Runstoppable.com to log my runs... it's got a nice google-maps-based route mapper that's easy to use - so you can go out for runs, and then map them out later to get exact distances. It also keeps a running tally of all of your miles logged.

Then - to make it fun - I go to a place called GMap Pedometer (another google-maps based one) - and keep tacking on to my 'virtual run' - I've chosen to start in Halifax, NS, Canada, and I'm currently heading down the east coast - almost to North Carolina now. At the end of every week I go tack on my new distance... and that keeps me motivated - to see how far I'm getting. Here's my current map as an example:

If this doesn't work for you - another great way is to register for a race. Register, pay the money, and then you're committed. Tell all your friends and coworkers you're going to do the race - makes it harder to back out later. So, if you could run 5k now, register for a 10k race that's a couple of months down the road - if you can run 10, register for a 1/2 marathon, etc.

Cheers,
Matt

Just do it. Even on days when you really don't want to, get yourself out there and try. If, after a few minutes you really hate it, walk the rest of the distance you intended to run. Set a healthy reward for yourself, like "if I run three times this week I'll buy those awesome shoes I saw at the store, or I'll buy a new lipstick." or something like that!

I've gotta have my favorite music on my mp3 when I run. Otherwise it's too boring. Get some tunes and make yourself get out there! If you go to a local park/running trail it will force you to run-at least that worked for me, b/c I didn't want to look like a pansy in front of the other runners. And please get some good shoes, preferable from a running store that can tell you whether you under/over pronate. Good luck!

Start slow, or at little distance. If you're going for speed, don't let yourself quit running until you can reach a pre-determined goal, then increase your goal every day. The same works for distance. Start at maybe a quarter mile, then work yourself up another tenth of a mile every day.

Run along a scenic route, this gives your eyes something to do whilst running

Also take an ipod with you, so you can sing along with the songs as you go. :)

if you manage to control your breath whilst singing you'll be able to start running longer distance after a period of time

Yes, you have to push yourself. Every time you want to run you have to set a new goal. If you do the same thing over and over it will get boring. Running needs discipline.

Pick a set time to run. Then make it part of your daily routine. After doing this for a week or so, it will become part of your daily life, and will be natural for you to run.

good luck.
