I'm attend a community college in california. My first year in college, I found out that my cumulative GPA is 1.97 and in order to recieve financial aid my GPA needs to to be 2.0 and above. Is it even possible for me to get financial aid by just a few points away? What should I do? They send me a petition for reinstatement of financial aid. I'll have to fill that out, but what exactly should I state to get approval from the appeal commitee?

I'm not going to lie. The main reason for my GPA to be below 2.0 is mostly because I wasn't trying my best. The second reason is because of my lazyness. The third reason is because of family isssue that I have to dealt with, causing me to be depress.

I would advise you to file the petition with your financial aid office because you have nothing to lose. They may approve it, in which case you can receive aid, or they may deny it in which case you would be in the same situation that you are already in. So you might as well.

I wouldn't lie on a petition either. This is documentation that gets placed in a file for you that is audited yearly by the federal government (yes, financial aid files are audited!) So it is best to stick with the truth.

What the appeal committee wants to see is your ability to do better. So talk about what mistakes you have made in the past and how you feel the reason for those mistakes have been involved. What is different in your situation now that the same thing is not going to happen again? Just focus on how much your education means to you and how dedicated you are going to be to doing well. They want to see that you are going to actually succeed instead of receiving aid without attaining a goal.

State what you did in this posting. The school will make the decision to approve or not. Chances are the financial aid office will NOT review your petition. When I was a director, I had people from other areas of student enrollment review the petition. Sometimes students were called in by those people for an in person review. I made NO decisions at all who was or was not approved. Many schools also do it this way. Ask the financial aid office for more details. But it is possible to get approved.

Wow, that is really low:( To be honest, though, it is your own fault. I don't think you can get your financial aid reinstated until you reach the 2.0. Try taking a couple of super easy courses if you can, like basic math or something to boost up your financial aid.
