My girlfriend thinks that I am crazy for still wanting to go with her and can't understand why because of what she has. She just found out a week ago. We have been going together for 3 months now. We met on a gay dating site. Herpes is not a death sentence & I love her. Would't you do the same?

No it is not a death sentence, but it can cause serious problems in some people, especially women. One of the most serious for women is the risk of break out during pregancy and during delivery. Herpes can cause serious birth defects. Also the risk for cervical cancer is increased by 5 times for those who have herpes.

If I were a woman, there is no way I would knowingly date someone who has herpes, for sure. Men should avoid women with herpes as well.

If everyone were open and honest with each other and didn't stigmatize, people with herpes would have no problem dating, because there are plenty of people who have it (approximatey 20% of the adult population between the ages of 25 and 60 y/o in the US).

understanding the disease is the key...together go over the do's and don'ts, if you love her or even as a friend this is very important. you said she found out only 1 week ago about it...she is scared and worried. this is the time where support is needed...not to be shunned.

my advice is get as much informative pamplets, books etc and go over them and learn together.

many people with contagious diseases live happy and long lives in relationships.

the key for the person who doesnt have it ...is not to get it...only thru proper education of the subject and understanding can you keep yourself safe.

since you have been dating prior to her finding out ...i strongly advise that you get checked also as soon as possible.

good luck

You are beyond a noble person for taking this stance. It takes a strong individual - nay, a strong lover - to show the support you have shown. Of course I would follow your example.
Congrats and I hope the relationship only grows from here.

well considering ive been in this type of situation before (not herpes but a diff. STD) my boyfriend and i both contracted it. and i still love him and he loves me.

i say if you really have deep feelings for a person you can overcome any obstacle. good luck and you're not crazy-just human. :)

In my eyes sight I can truly call this act true love, and very admiral of you to stick by your lover, but I don't think I would do this, because to me me it's like playing Russian roulette, and I wouldn't want to take that chance with my life. Good luck to you, and all your courage.

You are good because sorry I just would not want to take that risk. Death sentence or not.
