First of all you didn't say what "stuff" you did have so its difficult to work with no information. Prepare spaghetti according to directions on box. After you put the water in the pot for the spaghetti do the following: Use whatever tomatoes, fresh or canned, you have on hand. In olive oil (if you have it) gently saute garlic and onion until onions are transparent then toss in any vegetables you have on hand - for 2 to 5 minutes (cooked but not soft) - toss in tomatoes. Drain spaghetti well and add to veggies in the frying pan. Toss together. Place on serving platter and grate pecorino or locatelli Romano cheese over top (if you have it). Serve with sliced Italian Bread. Enjoy! Next shopping buy Pastene (kitchen ready) sauce - add 1 small can tomato paste - and one can water (fill tomato paste can). First add olive oil to coat frying pan - add garlic and onions low/medium heat then add chop meat, sausage meat (take out of casing) or cut up chicken cutlets, brown on all sides - add the sauce, paste and water. Cover and cook for 1 hour on simmer. Make pasta, drain, ladle out meats and place on top of pasta (or serve meat on side) - add grating cheese to top. Delicious !!

spaghetti sauce is one of those recipes that can be adjusted to fit what you have on hand - making it quite versatile and personalized.
cook some diced onion (and 1-2 cloves of garlic, and some bell pepper if you like) in a little olive oil to soften. then add in a can of crushed or diced tomatoes, and a little tomato paste to thicken (optional). season with salt, pepper, and basil or oregano.
let simmer to thicken, and toss with hot cooked pasta. add a sprinkle of grated parmesan and enjoy!

This quick and easy tomato sauce is the base for two meals: spaghetti marinara and steamed mussels with tomato broth.
We call for canned tomatoes because most of the fresh ones available in the wintertime have a bland flavor and mealy texture.
Sugar will help round out the flavor if your tomatoes are too acidic. You can also add a pinch of red pepper flakes if you like your sauce to have a bit of heat.
The leftover sauce also freezes well for future meals.
Active time: 15 min Start to finish: 1 1/2 hr
Servings: Makes about 5 cups.
2 medium onions, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 (28- to 32-oz) cans whole tomatoes in juice
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 teaspoon sugar (optional), or to taste
Cook onions and garlic in oil in a 4- to 5-quart heavy saucepan over moderately low heat, stirring, until softened, 6 to 8 minutes.
Add tomatoes, including juice, and salt, then simmer gently, uncovered, stirring and mashing tomatoes with a fork occasionally, until sauce is thickened and reduced to about 5 cups, 1 to 1 1/4 hours.
If sauce tastes too acidic, add sugar and cook 5 minutes more.
Cooks' note:
• Sauce can be made 5 days ahead and cooled, uncovered, then chilled, covered.
• Sauce can be frozen in an airtight container 3 months.
