Why are some of us quick to judge Absalom, when his brother Amnon did a greater crime--a more dastardly one?

Probably because Abosolom got more "press coverage" then Amnon. Amnon has only one incident in a single chapter mentioned about his whole life. Absalom has many stories (with Amnon's single appearance being as a supporting character to Absalom) spread over multiple chapters. So because there is so much more material about Absalom, he it going to get more mention when covering the Bible stories.
