I have a female cat who came to my house as a stray. I was wondering if there was any way I could tell if she has already been spayed? Would there be any incision scars and where would they be?

Yes, there should be an incision scar, although sometimes they heal so well it is even difficult for a vet to find! A spay scar should run vertical along the cat's lower abdomen, usually a few inches long.

Mine came to me the same way too. The vet said to be sure, he would have to shave her, so I decided not to bother. If she had kittens, it would have been fine as I had somewhere for them to live. As it is, she has now been with me for about 6 months now and despite being pursued by the local toms, has not produced a litter. I had a feeling that she must have been done as she had been in the neighbourhood for about 3 years. I guess if it is very important to you that she does not have kittens, I would get the vet to do all he can to establish if she has a scar. If one litter wouldn't be a problem, then leave her be and if she gets pregnant, get her spayed as soon as possible after the kittens are born.

Look on the belly for a scar. It could be very small, like 1 cm, up to an inch or so. Not very big, depending on who did it.
