She is 2 years old and always has denta stix, rawhide etc, and has great teeth, but my vet advised me to start brushing them as her breed (cavalier king charles spaniel) can suffer with dental problems later in life.

I brush all of my dog's teeth weekly. I bought a baby toothbrush and dog toothpaste and it is easier than with the big dog toothbrush that came with the toothpaste. They also have finger fitting wipe like things that you can use that have the toothpaste already on them.

It is especially important to brush teeth frequently in small breeds.

You should try to clean your dog's teeth about two times a week with dog toothpaste and a dog toothbrush that has soft bristles. Make sure to never use human toothpaste on a dog's teeth as it can cause the dog to have stomach problems.
You can also use a special metal and pointy instrument to get rid of the plaque or tartar that accumulates on the top and bottom of the dog's teeth. Make sure to be very careful though when doing this to not get too close to the dog's gums so as to not hurt him. Obviously for a dog to sit still and be willing to go through this, it will be necessary to train him to cooperate from the moment he is still a puppy; trying to do this to an adult dog that has no training whatsoever in this aspect is very difficult.

I have one two year old that I have to brush her teeth daily, even though she has dried food. It is just something in her saliva that give her bad teeth. I have a four year old with lovely white teeth and they have the same food. I use Logic and aloe vera gelly. I have tried the milk bones, denta stix etc and it gives them diahroah, and they dont do chewie bones at all, they just can be bothered with them, so I have no choice.

I do it at least every other week. (I really should be doing it at least weekly, preferably multiple times a week, but it often slips my mind.)

EDIT:

Just an FYI. I see a lot of people saying that they don't brush their dog's teeth because they give it dry kibble, rawhide, dental chews, rope, etc.

These things, while they are helpful in *addition* to brushing, are NOT a *replacement* for brushing. It is still important to brush your dog's teeth, especially if you have a breed that is more prone to having bad teeth.

Once a day. Each night, my dogs run to the upstairs bathroom and sit patiently waiting for their brushing! Beef-flavored toothpaste is by far the favorite in our house!

I also clean out my Saints jowls at the same time! Yumm! I always joke that I need to purchase one of those sucker instruments from my dentist so I can stop using my finger!! :)

I brush his teeth after every bath. He gets bones and other chewing items but I still brush them once a month or so. Use a pet appropriate tooth paste.

Well i am not just answering this for points. who ever put once a month for an answer obviously does'nt know about dogs and is only doing it for points lol . If you want your dog to escape the risk of gum disease then really 2-3 times a fortnight . And raw bones are certainly top in my list for canine teeth cleaning . if in any doubt go to http://www.dogwise.com/forums/messageview . although there is alot of writing on it it gives you great info . hope i helped!

I've tried it ... once. Good gawd, have ya ever tried to brush a Pit Bull's teeth? I ended up rolling all over the floor, wrestling with him ... and in the end, I was on my back, on the floor .. with doggy toothpaste on me from head to toe!! Lol, I'm not going to try it again, unless I have a couple of 'assistants'. :)

When I 'had' a dog, I would brush her teeth once a week. She began to become very fond of this tug-and-pull opportunity to see who would win. She loved it!
