It is ILLEGAL and a violation of Federal Law to remove or alter a firearm serial number in ANY way. It is punishable by Jail time in a Federal lock-up for up to 15 years or a $10,000 fine or BOTH. These charges are independant of, and in addition to any violations of state criminal statutes that are violated
Note* Removing a serial number by grinding or scratching it off doesn't work anyway. Advances in forensic science can now recover the serial number regardless........

Yes it is a federal crime to obliterate a gun's serial number. However it is NOT illegal to own a gun without a serial number, like the ones produced here in the U.S. and foreign countries prior to 1968.

It's illegal to sell a gun with the serial numbers scratched off. I'll bet this is a stolen hand gun.

Scratching the serial number off of anything is technically illegal. Furthermore, if the police find you with a handgun with a scratched off serial number you have two problems. 1. You can't prove registration for that handgun, thus making you own an unregistered gun (illegal) 2. They'll suspect that handgun of being stolen and/or sold illegally (big trouble for you)

Defacing the serial number of a firearm is a federal violation and likely a state violation as well.

If you are concerned about being legal, why would you even consider grinding off the serial number? If your legal gun gets stolen, the only positive way to identify it as yours would be by the serial number.

yes it is, besides a gun without a serial number is more suspicious than one with a serial number. if you need to modify the gun for whatever reason there are many creative things you can legally do. change the action or bolt and firing pin.
