according to many believers, we have purpose because god gave us purpose. but if god came before everything and everyone, and hence nobody to give him purpose, does that mean god does not have a reason for his existence? is god's existence pointless? is that why he acts in the self-destructive manner that he does?

indeed, god's life would have just as much purpose if he never created us at all, if he does exist that is.

my point is this... do we really need a god to have a purpose in our lives? if some believe a god can make a purpose for himself, why can't we create purpose just as easy?

I actually find this question really interesting.
I guess that since God has no higher authority to report to, he doesn't have a specific agenda. I guess he just kind of does whatever he wants. Since purpose comes from God, God would make his own purpose.
I admit, trying to conceive of the idea that God always was and always has been kind of stretches my brain.

God has many purposes and all of them are perfect. So, no it doesn't mean he has no purpose since no one gave him a reason for existence. God's existence is so much the opposite of pointless and God is hardly self destructive; people's ideas about God can and have been, though.
We, that meaning human beings, do have purpose in our lives, and it is up to us each, as individuals to find our purpose and to pursue it. Most of "us" that meaning human beings, know our purpose for existence in our heart and soul.
Because some people's ideas about God and of God over time and through history that were written down in a book have been rejected by you, does that mean God doesn't exist or does it mean that you haven't found God yourself? Why do you search around for other people's ideas about God when you can just discover him on your own?
Because you've rejected some believer's ideas does that mean you are pointless and self-destructive? If I said you were a genius, would that mean that everyone else should believe it? If I said anything at all about you would that mean it was something everyone should take to heart as the absolute truth about you? Using this logic then, is it fair to negate the possibility of God based on that reasoning?
I think your questions here are designed to provoke and are probably insincere. I think it's just a matter of time before someone reports you as a troll. But don't think I'm a prophet, for I am so not one. :)
Good luck with your search for debate.

There are many many questions we have, that will not be answered in our life. God is not self destructive, it is Satan, that has caused his self destruction, and man follows suit, if he chooses to follow Satan. God has a reason for everything.
We do not use all of our brain, there is only a small portion, about 10% that is used. I believe in the afterlife, the moment that we go into our spiritual bodies, we will have total recall. Perhaps at that time, we will have all the answers to all the questions we never knew here in this life. Either that or it won't matter, with this life being left behind, to never have to deal with death, sadness, hurt, etc. Maybe we won't even have a care as to what went on this earth once we are with the Lord. Did you ever think that our minds are so small, that we cannot even fathom what is yet to come when we join the Father? That we could not handle the truth here? God created us, we are His children, and I believe that he has a wonderful afterlife for those that love Him, and want to spend eternity with Him. He said so.

You present an interesting question. For what is the reason of God if he is not micromanaging his creations? I believe there is a more important question to ask, however: "Why do humans give God purpose?" Why is it that people need to believe in a being that doesn't exist or more importantly, not needed? I find it to be more mind boggling that humans find purpose in an imaginary thing let alone trying to find out what His imaginary purpose would be. Sorry, but people are so blind it is depressing.

I believe he created us to experience and learn, and since we all are ultimately part of god, he shares our experiences, because he is always with us, right? So maybe his purpose is Love.
God gives unconditional love, that cant be a very easy thing to do. How many people do you? as far as being self destructive, im not sure what you mean, he created us and we destroy, (that cant be an easy feat to watch what you created destroy other things you created and still love them). Face it whether or not you believe, everyday you are experiencing and learning. How much do you learn from lifes experience, when things are going great? I usually learn from falling on my face. Oh by the way I also believe that poetic justice is god sticking out his foot with divine justice, then probably laughing just a little, Its probably his humorous way of being able to unconditionally love us.

The purpose of our good and very moral God, is to serve us and the universe, in keeping everthing running in a organic wholeness. God gives us lots of challenges, to bring out the most in us. That way, we can experience life in all its intensity, and develop ourself to the highest potential. God wants us to contribute positively to the world, and help to create a better future for us all. He is not destructive, man is, when he ignors the problems arround him, and allows the abuse to others and the earth to happen.

He sure does! He said it right here!
Luke 4
17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21 and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
And that is prophesied in Isaiah 61:1 - 2.

GOD is his own purpose.
You cant lump God in with typical human reactions to situations. God is God. Nothing else you can say to that. How can we as mere humans begin to question what His purpose is when most humans cant figure anything out about themselves?
So I say to your question this. Why are you questioning Gods authority or purpose? What is it in you that believes that you can understand like He does? You cant ....

So if God's life and existence is pointless, why does that matter?
Your purpose and existence doesn't matter to me either. If you suddenly ceased to exist, I wouldn't even care.
So what exactly are you trying to prove?
