All dishes should be prepared in advance.
Nobody should do more in the kitchen than pop something in the oven for reheating.
The dishes should be easy to transport. I don't recommend a soufflé unless it's prepared by the host.
If there are many people attending the party, the serving size of each dish does not need to equal the number of guests. Everybody will take only a small portion of each dish when there are many from which to choose.
Traditional potluck dishes include casseroles, chili, bar cookies, salads and breads.
Recipes don't need to be fancy. Dishes that have been handed down through the generations are often the most popular.
If you're looking for a new recipe to try at your next potluck, here are several excellent collections to start you on your way to potluck fame.

Chicken, any way you want it. Vegetables the way you want them. If the others don't like the food you have prepared, you get the dishes back to enjoy at home.
Roasted pork and beef are also good for the pot luck dinner.
Salads without mayonnaise are good too.
Baked goods for dessert and home baked bread for digestion.

The word pot luck means just that pots come in filled with whatever other people make. There isn't any main list. You get lots of different things.

I think pot roast and mashed potatoes should be on the main list, but that's just my own opinion.

Typically it's divided into three categories: main dish, side dish, dessert.
You can be more specific and ask for salad or vegetable.
You can also ask for other things needed for the meal.... paper goods, drinks, ice, decorations.
You can also have a theme.... italian, mexican, vegetarian, diet, Thanksgiving.
Feel free to use your imagination.

Main dishes and who should bring what or which one of the
main dishes and then the rest of the group should be given their own choice to bring whatever they want to. The ones who do not cook can get the soft drinks or the liquor.
