I am against it. Who do the churches (Catholic primarily) think they are? There is only one sin that is unpardonable and that is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, Matt. 12:31. The churches aren't the ones who give the thumbs up or down on admittance to Heaven. God does that. It speaks prideful to me. Plus, every single church has something wrong with it. None are exactly right in their beliefs. Who are they to judge?

I was under the impression that once you were saved, you were always saved. The church may excommunicate you but the only one who can truly excommunicate any believer is God. I believe the only heresy which would cause this is blasphemy of the holy spirit. If a man says he is Christian and is saved and commits willful murder, do you think he really was a Christian to begin with?

The church may excommunicate but they really don't have the authority to do so. If anyone thinks for one minute any man on this earth has the power authority to speak for God, they are wrong. God does not share power with man. Man should not put himself in the place to say he speaks for God definitively. I consider that likened of the Anti-Christ.

each congregation of The Chruch is bound by The Word and Will of God... there is no service of The Church which is secret. Any honest seeker may attend any True Christian Service... however... those seeking to disrupt or to teach against The Word, or if they can not be respectful of good public order, are to be shown the door.

No one but God has that authority. People can choose to not associate with them however...

I think if the person is dangerously disruptive you can certainly kick them out as you would any other venue (like a disorderly drunk in the bar) or maybe if they were trying to get everyone to worship the devil or something it would be warranted.

Different faith communities (trans- churches) use the term differently and with different implications. For Mormons there is no shunning, the process is completely confidential and it is merely a step in the repentance process- for serious sins.

As with ANY group or collection of people, there will ALWAYS be a "bad apple" that has to be expelled from the group for the good of the whole.

Excommunication is one process for expulsion.

It should be used rarely and with great restraint.

A close friend of mine got excommunicated from his church for being gay. I never did believe in excommunication, and I certainly don't now that I've seen the emotional trauma my friend had to endure due to his excommunication. Also, an acquaintance of mine was excommunicated from a different church for being "morally lax" (i.e., she slept with some men outside of marriage). How can one group of sinners dare to judge anybody else for their transgressions?

I think its unnecessary especially when most of the time its done out of sheer stupidity (someone decides to not believe anymore or is gay, etc).

What happens when someone murders someone else? Most religions will cry repentance or death bed confessions are ok so they can get to heaven but if someone has a differing viewpoint or is gay...get rid of them.

Sure why not if they are not following denominations rules.
I asked to be excommunicated from one denomination (Mormon) so I could be taken off their church membership roles.

This is the difference between religion and christianity. In religion, they can kick you out of their community. No one can keep you from acting like Christ.
