This verse is taken a bit out of context, seeing as how it is in the middle of a sentence. You really need to read vv 11-13 to understand what it is talking about.

It is referring to the hopeless state of a lost Gentile--they are outside the promises and covenants of God to the children of Israel (the Jews), with no connection to God.

Back up and read the whole passage & it becomes more clear that it is showing how through Christ, the Gentiles (those uncircumcised in the flesh) have access to salvation through the blood of Christ.

If you know anything about the Old Testament, you know that part of the covenant Abraham made with God included circumcision of all the males. At that time in history, the Jews were the only people to practice this custom, marking them as set apart or different from the uncircumcised Gentiles.

I suggest you look it up in various translations and also see if you can find some commentaries on it. Without knowing exactly how the Bible study question is worded or what the topic is, it's hard for me to know what else you might need to know about this verse.

The link below will let you look it up in multiple versions simultaneously, and also has commentaries on many passages and topics.

I think it's just fine the way it is. If people can't understand, then they aren't studying hard enough.

Translation: Those that stray from faith and the teachings of Christ are lost, but (Eph. 2:13) the sin of straying is redeemed by Christ's blood.

It's not really good to examine Ephesians 2:12 by itself, because it is just a very small part of all of Ephesians 2. You need the whole thing for it to make complete sense.

Here is the verse in context: Ignore the little numbering (it refers to footnotes in my online version)

10 For we are His workmanship, created R95 in Christ R96 Jesus for good R97 works, which God prepared R98 beforehand so that we would walk R99 in them. 11 Therefore remember that formerly R100 you, R101 the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called "Uncircumcision" R102 by the so-called "Circumcision," R102 which is performed in the flesh by human hands-- 12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded R103 F33 from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the R104 covenants of promise, having no R105 hope and without R106 God in the world. 13 But now in Christ R107 Jesus you who formerly R108 were far R109 off have F34 been R109 brought near by R110 F35 the blood of Christ.

Remember that he is speaking to the Gentiles specifically. And to believers. It says this, in my own words.

I was created for good works from before time began. I was formerly far from God and christ and without hope until Jesus came along. Becasue of His blood I am made complete and whole and brought near to His throne and can now do the very works for which I was made. For BY GRACE I have been saved through faith and THAT is not even mine but it is the work of GOD alone so that I can never boast in what I have done but rather in what God has done in me.

Remember when you didn't have Jesus in your life. Remember when you were not one of God's people and did not have the promise of forgiveness and salvation. You were without any hope for what the future would bring or any peace of mind about how the world works.
