I'm an atheist seems bent on attacking Christians right now. I am not sure why he seems to think one cannot be a scientist and a Christian at the same time? I happen to be both. I have a bachelors and master degree in biological sciences. I am working on my PhD. You can be both. My studies in science have not weakened my belief in God at all. They have in fact strengthened it. Surely I am not the only one? Any other Christian who are scientists on here?

And before anyone asks my degrees are from a secular university.

I'm an atheist is a users screen name. Not my Beliefs. I personally happen to be what you would call a fundie.

Moiraes Fate - Actually I think the evidence depends on how you interpret it. If you allow the possibility of God then much of the evidence that points towards evolution can also point to God. It is just opening your mind enough to allow there to be a possibility of God.

gdc - So Francis Collins, one of the men responsible for the human genome, cannot be a rational, logical, scientific thinking scientist? I think this would be a surprise to him.

In the first sentence I'M AN ATHEIST is another users screen name not statement of beliefs on my part.

novangelis - you ever think the reason I do not use my name here. Nor list my university or list my publications is for the very reason you mention? A Scientist who people know is a Christian is greatly persecuted. Right now I cannot be open about my beliefs at school. Once I finish my degree then I will be able to.

novangelis - actually one of my committee members taught a class on evolution I took. He knows my views and while he disagrees he is one of my biggest supporters. My adviser also know my views. He happens to be Catholic. He is also very well known in his field. I just keep my views private to most people.

My prayers are with you. I know that this is a tough situation, or can be. A dear couple at church's brother is a science professor at a secular college and is a devout Christian. Recently, he has had a terrible time and has been viciously attacked in a number of ways, luckily not physically.

Even scientists will admit that they have yet to create something out of absolutely nothing. Sure we can clone things, make things for parts of things, and so forth. But we have yet to have nothing, and make something.

:)

God bless you.

I'm-an-atheist needs to expand his horizon a bit more. I'm not personally a scientist but I know many who are fundamental Christians. Science has done nothing to disprove the existence of God. And lately science is doing more to prove the biblical account of our history and origin. It all depends on the world view the person starts with as to which way you want the evidence to point. Scientific evidence can be interpreted several ways. I personally think evolution is so full of holes that any reasonable person who looks at it would have to dismiss the theory. But, that's me.

The statements: "I'm an atheist seems bent on attacking Christians right now" and "I happen to be both [scientist and Christian]]" are contradictory, is seems that you are an atheist/Christian who is getting a PhD in biology??

There are a few scientists that are Christians or other faiths, but the percentages are close to inverse of the ratio of Christians to atheists in the general population.

So you believe Genesis. Which chapter? See, chapter one and two contradict each other. The Bible cannot be reconciled with itself, much less science, so your claim is ludicrous. Now, this is not true for all religions, so science and religion are not incompatible as a rule. Since science generally says nothing about the existence of a deity, science has no trouble coexisting. But someone that will function on "faith" should not be allowed to work in a scientific field, since your belief indicates a clear lack of scientific reasoning.

I'm a scientist, but not a Christian.

I seriously doubt that you are a Ph. D. candidate at a real university. If you were, you would know that anything you wrote here could be used against you at your dissertation defense. No serious candidate would risk the 5-7 years hard work to spout the easily refuted statements you have made in the past.

ADDENDUM:
Don't think you're that anonymous. If you've been to programs as cutthoat as the one I was through, you're already dead, but don't know it.

Do you believe in literal 24 hour six days? Evolution? 6-10 thousand years?

I do. I'm not a scientist. I'm a theologian! (But, theology used to be the queen of sciences

My hand is raised.
Biology and nursing degrees here.
But i don't practice...i'm now a stay at home mom.

I believe in both science and Religion and keep my faith strong in God. In actual fact. The more i learn about science, the more i feel closer to Him.

Monte said it for me once again.

I am not a scientist, but I am a believer in God and I accept science's explanation of evolution and the Big Bang. I think science can show just how God does create.

A fundamentalist christian going into science? I'll believe it when i see it. How do you manage to tell hundreds of people that men share a common ancestor with apes and fish when you yourself don't believe it? That either makes you a conflicted scientist or a really bad fundie.

I think you are confused.

People aren't saying that scientists don't believe in a god. What many say is SCIENCE proves evolution.

The community of SCIENCE is made up of people who have beliefs and people who don't have beliefs. Being a SCIENTISTS doesn't mean you are an unbeliever.
